    My AT, some questions

    Hi all,

I just bought a 1988 AT (so RD-03) with 90.000Km but apparently stil going strong (knock on wood).
    A couple of questions though:
    - where the h*ll is the idle speed adjustment, I can't seem to locate it under the left fairing (I have the haynes manual, but it's for xvr-750 bikes). As for now when warm the speed is around 1700rpm, I'd like to bring it down to 1200.
    - The bike probably got a bent yoke (don't know upper or lower) when riding i've got the handlebars slightly to the left. Annoying, is there anything to do about it, apart from replacing the yoke?

Thanks in advance and happy riding,

    Dietbrand Vandenberghe

Insure the throttle cables are adjusted properly before tinkering with the carbs. See chapter 1 in the Haynes. Yokes are probably fine. Bike would have to be pretty much destroyed if they were bent...IMO. I would slightly loosen all the pinch bolts on the yokes (4 upper and 4 lower) and give the wheel/forks/sliders a kick with your heavy boots left or right as required with the forks on their stops. Return bars to center and keep persuading until straight....tighten pinch bolts. Works for me...others may have a different method.

RD-03 owner here, the idle screw under the left hand side should actually look like a thumb screw which is positioned a little off of vertical... But yes, I would take GSPD's advice first.

The idle screw can come loose (be broken off its mount. On one of my RD04s this has happened and it means I have to look for where it has fallen to as it is on about six to eight inches of rubber hosing.

As for the bars. If the bars are crooked in their rubber mounts, which would happen if the bike had a prang, then simply loosen (no need to remove) the two nuts underneath the top yoke and fiddle with the bars until you are happy then retighten them.

After a big off on Salisbury Plain once I rode with my bars almost at 45 degrees then as son as we undid those two nuts they sprang back to the correct position.

Thanks for the help everybody. I'll give the boot-method a try

Whealie: What are those rubber mounts you're talking about? The risers?

I still can't locate the idle adjustment. Anyona got a picture (worth a thousand words ya' know)? I've got this sinking feeling it's gone.

    Cheers,

Handlebars are held on in two places. These mount into the top yoke (under risers if you have them). There is a nut underneath the yoke (I think it is a 15mm, maybe 14mm) a couple of turn to undo them will be enough to move the bars around - best to get someone to hold the front wheel for you.

If I get outside to the garage I'll take pics of the idle adjuster. It i s a smal thumbnail size black cap, from memory.

Check your rear wheel alignment - sounds daft but it is one of the biggest causes of handlebars out of line - I have an old Triumph 500 with a big rear tyre which when centralised rubs the chainguard so it has to be set just a little to the left and as such the handle bars are never straight,

    Enjoy
