    Advice needed!!

I am living in Yemen where i have no single spare for my RD04. Am traveling in some months time for a year and i got no buddy to leave the bike to at least run the engine once in a while.

Is there a way of leaving the bike without starting it for a year and have no defaults??

I think that after a year not using the bike will cause plenty of problems.

Get the bike nice and hot (a long run) to dry out any water in the exhaust. Drain the oil and refill with fresh. Fill the fuel tank right up to the filler cap. Remove a sparkplug in each cylinder, pour in a small amount of engine oil, turn the engine over a few times to spread it about a bit. Drain the carbs and turn the fuel tap off. Remove the battery. Grease and lube evrything you can think of, especially the chain. Put the bike on the centrestand and if possible get the front wheel in the air so neither tyre is on the ground. Store in a dark non damp place. Put the keys somewhere you can find them again in a year.

when draining the carbs I usually run the bike then turn off both fuel taps. then let the bike run till it runs out of fuel

not sure if this is any better but it clears the system very well.

ANother point is to put about 5ml of oil in each spark plug hole and crank the bike over twice.

Also put something over the exhaustto stop moisture getting in or even worse Mice or other little creatures. Or keep the sand out.

    Cant think of anything else.

Yen and Farmboy have it covered

Don't forget to put the spark plug's back after putting the oil in.

In a year's time you will probably have to ditch a full tank of old fuel (but fuel is'nt so expensive over there)

    Probably a new battery too.

Don't run the motor after pouring in the oil. The overall idea is to run the motor until hot as described, then change the oil so that the acids etc in the used oil do not get a chance to attack the inside of the motor. The small amount of oil then poured through the spark plug holes is intended to coat the insides of the cylinder bores to prevent rust. After the oil is poured in, it flows down onto the piston. You then turn over the engine by hand using the nut on then end of the crank a few times so that, as the piston rises and falls, it leaves the oil distributed over the bore. Running the motor afterwards would nullify the effect.

...and when you turn the crankshaft, turn it anticlockwise or you'll load up the camchain tensioners.
