It is more than just a day blasting around the race track, it is however a great way to learn to control your bike at the limits.
Check out the Tiger rider in this clip I didn't realise Tigers went down that far and tell me you wouldn't want to do the same.

1997 Jag 3.2 Exec (jangly jangly!); two bicycles; 2001 XL 650 V-1 which is ready for anything, cuts through traffic like a hot knife through butter and just gets better and betterand a low mileage Pan European ST1100
I remember reading a magazine article a few years ago were a Pro was given a 125 and a member of the public with a few track days under his belt was given a range of bikes starting with the 125 up to a 1000 sports bike. (Actual models escape me at this time.) The Pro was faster then other guy every time, why, because he was able to carry the speed through the corners.
Given that pure road tyres are available for the @ now I reckon a half decent rider will be able to give some sports bikers a run for their money on a track, especially the more twisty ones. Saying that, a track day is more than trying to beat a few other guys’, it's about finding out you and your bikes limits as well as hopefully learning to be a better, safer rider.
I would love to take my @ to a track day, just never get round to it.
In the end, it doesn’t matter what bike you ride, it's whether or not you can get utilize its limit.
Don
no sportsbike monkeys would get past me!!!
not because i'm fast - because my 'Dero is soooooooo wide they'd have to pull a move like th eone rossi put on stoner at the corkscrew!!

The pro was Ron Haslam aboard one of his track day NSR 125 Hondas. The track day kiddy took out one of the schools trackday Fireblades.
The trick with all small bikes is to carry more corner speed as can be seen on any 250 against MotoGP data. The lower power output allows the tyres a bit more grip and less break away
