Bodged job now high idle speed??

    Hi all,

I was fitting new plugs last week to my 97 RD07 and got a little spanner happy and decided the easiest way to do this would be to remove the tank and also remove the airfilter housing. Removed both, fitted the new plugs and then refitted the connection from the airfilter to the carburettor (is this right?) and put the tank back in place. Was going into work the next day and the bike sounded rough, there was a noticeable ticking noise and my idle speed was 1500 rpm when previously it had been 900/1000.

I've taken the tank off again and refitted the tubing more carefully which has got rid of the ticking noise and the bike sounds better but my idle speed is still around 1500, any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Sean

Check the choke cable/cable's are not trapped/pulled, . . . which may hold choke on a little.
Unfortunately it's tank off again to see it.

Sounds like theres air getting into the system from somewhere other than the airbox. Check your airbox to carb connections - they can be a real pain to seat properly sometimes.

Another thing I've seen is broken / open connections where the inlet tubes leave the airbox - persished / old rubber in the cases I've seen. Silacone sealant can help if they are perished.

    just my tuppence worth.

Thanks for that, sounds like it could be the problem alright. The fuel cut-off/reserve switch is broken so its a two man job for someone to hold the tank up while someone else tinkers, the joys!!

Don't tighten the clips on the rubber collars between the airbox and carbs too much, as I've heard this encourages the rubbers to slip off.

Just pinch the clips up, and they should hold on if you find this is the problem.

oops, I may have done that when I was refixing the tubing. I'll redo that and check to see if the choke cable is getting pinched at the weekend.

Also, make sure the ticking noise isn't coming from the fuel pump. If so it could be that the fuel line is pinched or bent, and fuel starvation makes the pump make that noise. That wouldn't affect the idle though. For that I would look first at the choke cable and plungers...
