    Engine painting. Advice needed.

    Hi Guys.

Advice if possible. I have a bike engine stripped back to the ally cleaned and degreased. Now I need to paint but don't know what paint to buy for the job.

With you're wealth of knowledge you must know.

    Cheers Brainiacs

First thing to condider is only go for thin coverage, thick coatings crack and flake. I would never brush paint as it will allways go on too thick.

Use a laquer/celulose or if the colour is available use a colour from Hammerite smooth range. Preparation is very important. Alloys almost instantly oxidise and this causes problems with adhesion. Wire wool the surface or use one of those green scouring pads, wipe with a de greaser and then imediatly spray a relativly fine coat of etch primer, (available in aerosol cans, use a carbon mask) then a fine base coat (primer surfacer) followed by the colour coat.

If the paint is on too thick it will bubble and discolour round the hotter parts (round the exhaust).

I try and use the Hamerite products if a colour in the range a colour suits otherwise I use celulose based products a this withstands heat and is a thinner finish.

I have painted engines, calipers and other parts that are subject to harsh environments in this way and find it to be the best solution. Good luck
