    speedometer

I was giving a bike lesson to a friend today and my speedo packed up. It would move a little, very erraticly, then stop again.

Popped in the garage and disconnected the cable at the wheel end. Pulled the whole thing out from the cable outer and it was in really good condition. Slid that back, pulled the front wheel out and removed the speedo drive. Turned the drive and the output part turned. Chucked my spare speedo drive in anyway (everyone should have an Africa Twin in pieces in their garage). Put the wheel back on and rode up the road, speedo exactly the same. Came in cos I was freezin.

Tomorrow I'll try my spare cable, then ride it to see if that cures it. If that doesn't it's time to dig out my old speedometer. Bloody thing, have to sort it before Monday as I go through so many cameras on the way to workl it's not funny.

That's what I'd like to be happening, nice n cheap to fix. I'll chuck the spare cable (if I got the right one back off Chad, they all look the same to me) on in the morning to see if it's better then order a new one if it is.

Exactly the same with a different cable. Now I've got to swap the poxy clocks over.

That's my mileage reduced I suppose, my spare clocks are the ones that tripped past 100,000 miles and now show 30,000 miles. Down from 76,000 on the current clocks at least.

    Re: speedometer

Hi Guys on the subject , seeing as the speedo is cable driven how do the trips work ? On the AT I have just got (92 model But not sure its from europe will post some photos asap ) the trips are not even lighting up or working, I have not had a look yet, but any pionters would be appreciated fuses, problem block connectors etc or is it a new set ? any advise gratefully accepted. Wont be out on it though untill I have time to tart it up ...money and time always in short supply !!!!
On the cable issue I lube them with a light oil just a drop though ,and make sure the routing is free and looped not bent ...
Only new to this forum so look forward to a reply or two ...

jonnyboy, could just be bulbs in the clocks. There are four of them.

If your reg/rec ever packed up those are the sort of bulbs that would blow - usually the rear goes first mind.

    Re: speedometer

Well listeners, I swapped the clocks over and you're not gonna believe this, the problem was still there! Despite my bike having had 47,000 miles knocked off the clock!! I removed the top end of the cable and spun the front wheel and the cable was definitely rotating.

Time to look at the wheel again. I popped the front wheel off again, pulled out the speedo gearbox and looked at the metal drive ring that sits in the hub under the oil seal. It looked okay??

I then went and dug out my spare front wheel to compare. Sure enough, the tangs looked slightly different. My current wheel's tangs seemed to be flatter and worn. I took the oil seals from both wheels out, swapped the metal ring, refitted the seal and popped the wheel back on. problem went away!!!!!

So problem solved I swapped the clocks back over and am showing 76,000 miles again.

I really hate working on bikes, it's just a chore, there are only two reasons I ever do it.

    1. I definitely do not trust bike shop mechanics unless I know them personally and have seen their work.

    2. I cannot afford to pay bike shop mechanics, even the rubbish ones.
