    jetting....

    Hi all,

just wanting some advise to sort out a few things out on the bike before departing for France later in the year. (750 AT 2001)..

First of all the bike as a Leo Vince pipe on should the bike need jetting or any adjustment to the carbs, seems to running a bit rich thats all.

Also the dreaded choke, does not seem to be working, is it worth blanking off or just replacing cable. Spoke to a nice chap called Yen before buying the bike who seemed to know hell of a lot of stuff, was going to ask him but lost his number..

But what are the pro`s and con`s of blanking the choke.

    Cheers Paul.

Ps any advise on camping touring through France would great..

Is the pipe road legal ??? Do you notice any loss of power ? , bike running hot ? difficult to start ??

If its un baffled then it will probably be a little lean, not rich

Rich mixture feels like the bike is bogging down, wont pull smoothly.

I lean mixture makes the bike run hot, it should pull smoothly but with much less power and probably popping from the exhaust on the overrun.

checking the plugs are a good indication of this or you could ask you local garage to "sniff" the exhaust with their gas anayliser.

You cant blank the choke off. When the choke is closed its on ! It richens the mixture. If you blank it, you will be riding with the choke permanently on which will make it run like a bag of ****..

I havnt looked at the AT carbs in any detail so im not sure of the design though. Im not sure of how the choke works in this one... Blanking one carb can leave the choke on, blanking another can leave it off.

Either way is a bad idea. If its permanently off, how will you start it when its really cold ????

    Re: jetting....

    Hi thanks for the reply,

bike usually fire up first turn with no choke on, but have to catch it with throttle cos if not its a sod to fire up. choke apllied makes no difference to engine idle speed.

No stamps on exhaust saying its not road lagal, does not seem to run hot, does pop & f@rt sometimes on over run tho..

    Cheers

If the choke is stuck on, once the engine gets warm, it will run like poo! (worse on a hot day). I have been told that LV cans should be fine with no rejetting but just weigh up the options.

New choke cable + 2X plungers Aprox £90.
    A Dyno check Aprox £60-£80.
To replace burnt out valves and maybe valve seats Somewhere between £300 and £500 at a guess

Your call but as was suggested get the gas sniffed is a good cheap start to sleeping at night.

I have blanked my choke off. The plunger and spring are taken off the cable, placed inside the carb and the blanking covers from the front caliper pins are used to hold them in. I have had no trouble starting my bike, even in the recent sub-zero weather (it's all about teqnique). My tickover is perfect at all times, I get about 50-55mpg at motorway speeds plus some town work. My plugs are a perfect colour. Small children look admiringly at me when I pass. Nuns swoon at my overall goodness.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

The readings on the gauges when balancing the carbs is not as important as the to being the same.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    May I ask why ???

Just fed up with them breaking or removing it from the equation so they never will ?

My AT doesnt NEED the choke to start but it certainly helps in the cold and really helps to bring the engine upto working temperature quickly.

I dont think i could bothered feathering the throtte for a few minutes on a cold morning

Like stumpy fingers says, they should be the same !! Just adjust your idle screw to compensate when they match.

Good job your doing this, its one of the things you should really check before you start playing with jets.
