    Acerbis Handguards / Bar Weights

    Hi all,
I recently purchased some Acerbis Multiplo handguards and am somewhat stumped at almost the first hurdle.

I assume the bar weights have to come off and as the fitting kit includes a new set to replace the existing weight and internal stuff (I don't know what the technical term is - thingy that the screw that holds the weight on goes into), I need to remove the original from the inside of handlebars.

Hmmm. How? Am still not convinced that the replacement parts will be enough to fit inside the handlebars and hold the guards on, but I'd like to get the original mechanism out to check.

    Help greatly appreciated.

The internals are held in by wedge then opens up as the bolt is tightened... Either that of a thick rubber wedge held in with an interferance fit.

To remove the internals, take the weight off and then thread a bolt back into the hole enought to grip it but not tighten the wedges.

With plenty of WD40, tugging and screaming.. the internals will pull out..

The acerbis ones will work as long as your bars are standard.

If you look very carefully at the end of the bars there is a clip that locates within the bars, this holds the internal weight. Just pulling won't release the weight and only result in a red face!

    Scooter.

You may be better off using the original barend fixings they are most likely better than the new ones in the kit, if the thread is not the same, use the original srews as well.... worth a try

The only problem I found with using original fittings is they can let the guards rotate. Give it a go and see if you can get on with them like that but for me it was one of those niggly things that I find annoying. I fitted the acerbis bits (and have also now changed bars) and it's much more robust.

That's what I was hoping to avoid....All it does round here is make the neighbours hate me more. Fuel pump already went over the fence in a hissy fit.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Rog - was thinking that might be the best solution.

Alan - Noted though, there is a large difference in the screws so am not certain the originals will be good enough.

Thanks for the comments guys. Will let you know how I get on tomorrow (assuming I don't throw my toys over the fence in frustration).

Internals WILL come out that way... done it about 100 times on many bikes... I never said it would be easy but if you want to do the job properly, its the only way !

Easiest way is to get some threaded rod with some big nuts and washers on the end and find something to make a slide hammer out of it.

    Your choice !

Whats the point in having hand guards if they slip around when they hit something ?????

    Your choice !

Glad I'm not the only one. Have hollered some truly obscene language before and had to stop myself mid-rant...

...other than pushing in the locking clip tab and pulling it out by hand of course

Spot on. If you want them to guard anything you want them pretty firmly attached - unless you just want them for looks and to keep the rain off.

But remember if they are rock solid and you have an off on hard ground the lot may snap including the lever they protect.they only protact your hands from bushes and barbed wire in the lanes, So build in a little give as in set the guards and the lever so they will rotate with a little force and set the clutch/brake lever at about the same torque. then when you have an off they will protect your hands as you land and let go and will rotate rather than snap if its a real basta*d of an off.
