How do I prepare for a long journey

As I mentioned in the post about brakes, I thought it wise to start a new post on how to prepare for a long journey. I will be taking my AT to Kenya where I plan to do a lot of riding for Charity purposes. My friend EastAfrican rider has mentioned that parts are very difficult to get hold of there. I would like advise on what i need to carry as spares, non perishable parts, like brake calipers and so on. I would not like to be in the middle of no where and totally stranded.

Fuel pump is a must.......Obviously tyre repairing kit. Replace clutch cable before you go.
Where ever you go...there you are...

Spare lamps - (And fit headlight protectors)
    Oil filters
Change all fluids before you go.
    Spare bearings
Service swingarm linkage before going with new seals (Dusty environment you're heading to)

Don't think I'd take calipers, they won't rust in that climate and a dodgy caliper isn't going to stop you moving amazing how well you can forward plan and engine/rear brake when you have to.

    That's just my thoughts anyway.

Are you riding all the way down of shipping the bike ?

Facet pumps are the best, The fourm shop sells them.
Clutch cables, Tyres, air filter, brake pads, oil filter, set of spare plugs,
How's the condition of your chain and sprokects? Check them before you go.
Back to question I asked above, if you are shipping bike, regulation are that you must drain oil and Fuel and disconnect battrey (My experince shipping a bike to Africa).
I also recommend Fork dust seals (Depends on condition of yours now).

Anyway, are you riding Kenya only or doing other countries? Plenty to see and enjoy. Enjoy it and good luck.

At a push, a Mitsubishi Lancer fuel pump will also do, I am currently running one, so far 21000kms , without missing a beat.

Re: How do I prepare for a long journey

planning a couple of longish trips myself - North Africa, Europe etc

will be renewing chain & sprockets, spare oil for the scottoiler, new facet pump. New clutch cable, just completed major service so no worries there.

Just making a complete toolbox and secure case for the back of the bike.

    Spare tubes, etc..

New set of TKC80 tyres and bobs your uncle

Sand might be an issue in parts so maybe a spare Airfilter also.
