    Possible Regulator / Rectifier Failure

    Hey All,

My @ seems to be suffering a bit lately, first there was the speedo that stopped working and now I think the regulator may be fried...

I was out on the bike yesterday but when I stopped and parked up the bike my dyna charge monitor leds stayed on even when I removed the keys (it usually goes off when I turn off the bike). It was the green light that was staying on so I wasn't too concerned.
But when I got home, and parked up again, the led light stayed on again but this time it went to red, indicating that there was a draw on the battery, even though everything was off and the keys were out.
To prevent any damage I disconnected the battery.

I have been told by a couple of people that this may be the regulator / rectifier. Do anyone else here think this may be the case?

What should I do to try and diagnose the problem? I don't want to buy a new regulator unless I have to (I'm still a bit skint after Christmas).

    Cheers,
    Stef

Get hold of a multimeter and check out the charging system properly.
    Follow this:

Take off the dyna charge monitor first to make sure that doesn't interfere with any readings.

Your Dyna Charge Monitor should be wired to the "switched" side of the ignition, so that it only illuminates with the key on. I would bet your charging system is just fine and that you need to sort out the wiring for the Dyna as it is now obviously "hot" to the battery.

Thanks for that Alan, I'll give that a go today. Cheers for posting the link, I did see a similar link in an older post but the link was broken so thanks again.

The Dyna Charge Monitor has been on the bike since I got it so I'm not sure how it is wired. I'll check it today also.

By the way GSPD750, are you the fella I met at the Touratech event with the AT with the Rothmans fairings on it?

    Cheers,
    Stef

Oh yeah, just spotted that now..duh

I met someone at the Touratech event who had username ending 750 but I can't remember what the name was... ah well...

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how I get on with the bike.

Re: Possible Regulator / Rectifier Failure

    Hi AlanH, GPSD750,

Sorry for not posting sooner but it has been wet / raining the last few days so I didn't want to be playing with the electrics.

Anyway, I don't think there is a problem with the rectifier or the battery because I followed the fault finding diagram and it indicated that everything is ok (except for maybe cleaning the connections).

I removed all the extra connections (dyna charge monitor, power sockets, starcom socket etc) from the battery and then I used the multimeter to check the battery and it is giving 12.6V when the bike is off.
When I started the bike and revved it to 2500 rpm, the reading was 14.3V and when I revved higer to 5000 rpm, it stayed at 14.3V +/- 0.05V. According to the diagram this means the regulator / rectifier is ok so I assume that something is wrong with the Dyna Charge Monitor (especially since it was staying on even when the the bike was switched off) or maybe one of the power sockets etc that I removed.

I think the Dyna Charge Monitor was correctly wired to the "switched" side of the ignition because it used to only come on when I turned the key. It is probably a loose connection or a short somewhere I think, do you agree?

I guess the bike is ok to ride again now (I wasn't using it because I was worried a failing regulator or rectifier would do damage) so I am going to take to my garage and strip it down so that I can examine all the wiring and give the connections a squirt of WD40.

Thanks for the help and suggestions,
    Stef

Those readings sound fine. Duff monitor or iffy socket wiring it is. Probably the cheapest option
