    Ignition dilema

When I bought my RDO4 the previous owner informed me that there was a theft attempt on the bike and the thieves broke the steering lock. I bought a replacement ignition switch from AlanH and very greatful for his service. I just have a small dilema in that, when I took mine apart to compare I realised that the one I bought is slightly different. The actual body of the switch fits fine, the barrel is slightly longer but thats not the problem. I have realised that there are more wires attached to the replacement switch. The old one has three wires, red, blue red & red black. The other one has red, black,2x brown, brown white. I compared the electrical diagrams in my haynes manual but none of the diagrams represent the new switch. Does anybody know how i can adapt the wires to suite my bike. If i can find out the function of the several wires on the new switch, maybe i could check my diagram and the ones that coinside with each other i can connect. Please help me somebody.

    That's a bit puzzling!

Both RD04's but different wiring? Is the connector the same orientation with the same amount of ways in it? Are any wires doubled up or do you have extra pins?

I'm nowhere near my Haynes manual at the moment, so can't advise exactly. Worse case scenario, you could probably make it work, but you need to go through everything with a multimeter and connect similarly.

Also, if you look at the bottom of the switch, there is usually a round plastic cover which you can carefully pry out. You will then see the wires soldered onto the switch contacts,, so you can count if they are same/similar or have more poles.

    Good Luck

    Trial and error mate.

I have done this before and it takes a short while but you should be ok provided you are not a complete numpty.

    Re: Ignition dilema

Ignition switch should have 4 wires colours vary.
2 wires are for the side tail lights,
2 wires are for the ignition.
When the ignition is turned on the battery feed goes to the starter solenoid, and a feed goes across to power the side lights.
Check the manual against your feeds, check at the plug, and match the feeds.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: Ignition dilema

My old switch has only three wires which go to a plug so i want to adapt the new one which has 5 wires and the manual only shows the three wires which. I dont know what the 5 wires from the new switch are for. I might have to trial and error it. Does anyone have the wiring diagram from the newer bike with more than three wires, i dont know the year of the bike it came from, i might have to ask AlanH
