Goes on when I press down, sometimes flickers, seems to go off the harder I press.
Solutions? A good squirt? hit it with a hammer? Replace it?

Check the adjuster the back brake switch is a little sensitive to the grime of the roads so tends to stick and causes the brake light to go on and off as you press down harder
Fit a hydraulic switch instead of the plain banjo bolt:
Rear brake light switch cure
It will be an end to rebuilding/adjusting/replacing brake light switches that have got filled with mud and rubbish.

Just disconnect it. I didn't think you used your brakes? I thought you just found a substantial bush or canyon to plough in to!
Whip the switch off, drown it in WD40, then work it into the switch by pulling and pushing on the plunger. You may need to give it a few extra squirts of WD40 to disperse any crap coming out of the switch.
There's a Kate Moss slim style chance it could be a wiring issue, but I doubt it.

I knew I was in for trouble.
Cheers for all your kind regards
Am offroad on Saturday (Please join us if you fancy it) and plan to do a full service, balance the carbs and clean and fettle the brakes after that so it can come off and be squirted to merry hell then (and then hit with a hammer).

Sorted I think. Ended up having to prize the switch apart and found it blue and black so gave the bits I could hold a sanding, the fiddly buts a scrape with the end of a very small screwdriver and all of it a good spaying. Put it all back together again and hey presto!
So thanks everyone.
(Mind you, it took longer to do this than to balance the carbs).
