Alloy rim corrosion - black marks

I bought a secondhand back wheel for my @ about 4 months ago, and it was immaculate. I havenīt used the bike for a couple of months and went out to give it a clean today. After washing the rear wheel Iīve found that itīs covered in black corrosion marks (pic below). Iīve tried polishing it with Solvol but it made no difference. So I have a couple of questions:

    1. How can I get rid of the black marks?

    2. How can I stop them reappearing if I do get rid of them?

Twin rims are a bast*rd for rotting, you should take the tyer off and see how it looks underneath. Then if its rough get them powdercoated as i don't think there is a cure as such.

I have this as well. Have decided that if I keep the bike I will invest in a set of stainless rims/spokes to be laced up by a mate of mine. or simply fit cast wheels from a Varadero etc. Not a hugely difficult job.
When I grow up ..... yeah right!

Y'see, I could say "You can go fast, I can go anywhere, Africa Twin" But you buggers have 'em as well so it would sound pretty lame .... oops!

Ever since my first bike, I have always cleaned my wheels with WD40.

I think in the case of an AT, this will help prolong the life of the rims.

Another thing I've done on my AT is to carefully squirt some chainlube around each spoke and down in the rim. As it goes off, I sorta hope it will stay in there and stop corrosion around the spokes. Who knows if it will??!!

I think the only thing you can do is keep them as clean as possible, and don't let the bike stand in any deep water (like I did much to my regret in the past!!).

Mel is on the button, and if you can afford it, powdercoating is a good option.

Re: Alloy rim corrosion - black marks

Sounds like salt corrosion to me.

All above comments apply - they all do that sir

I've painted mine with Smoothrite paint after under-coating / priming them with some fancy stuff a proffesional industrial painter gave me. So far the finish has lasted very well - even on the sump guards finish is still OK after 4k+ miles.

    Just my ramblings

Think I'm just going to paint the rest of the bike to match the black spot pattern on my rims.
