    Cheers all.

Anyone here who's opened up a spedometer?
Mine isn't working and the gear in the wheel seems fine. Any ideas??

    Re: spedometer

Are you sure that its not the speedo drive on the wheel!?

I had a fault with the sppedo on my AT recently, Have you taken the speedo drive cable out of the speedo and spun the front wheel? Does the cable spin in the housing or is it motionless?

I found the the metal washer in the wheel with the two raised lugs that spin the speedo drive were bent just enough to not engage the drive, but looked ok on inspection!!

Just a thought, as speedo's don't tend to fail very often!!

    Re: spedometer

I recently modified an RD07 speedo to work with a RD03 wiring harness so that I could add the tripmeter to my 650. There doesn't seem to be much that can go wrong tbh. I guess under it's possible that the coil spring could that drives the needle could snap, but I've never heard of it happening myself.

Seems to me it's much more likely to be the little drive unit on the wheel. I've had one that has rounded on the inner bore with the result it looked fine, but when the wheel spun it didn't turn the gear (admitedly that was on an XT500 not an @), but they have a very similar system. I would check that little plate very carefully; both the prongs and the inner bore to make sure they have no room to spin.

That's exactly what i've tried. The wheel is rotating when i spin my wheel. The cable seems fine, i mean it's not jammed or corroded.
Don't really know what it is.

When I disconneted the spedocable from the front wheel, i was able to push the inner wire into the cable, don't know if this is normal though???

Do you mean the cable rotates at the speedo end when you spin the front wheel? If you hold the cable inner lightly with your fingers and spin the wheel does the cable inner stop turning?

Speedos don't usually completely pack up as there is no actual contact between the bit the cable drives and the bit the needle mounts on. Sometimes the springs go rusty or the damping goes but total failure usually points to a fault elsewhere.

    Re: speedometer

I've disconnected the spedometer in the wheel and while spinning the wheel i could feel the gear turning by just putting my finger in the hole.
    So i assume that's working.
The cable itself seems fine, moves around freely and doesn't seem to have any resistance whatsoever.
I think the problem might be a wrong cable?? but i'm not sure. Cos i can push the "inner cable" into the outer cbale whilst connected to the spedometer. Now i don't know if this is common. I can imagine that there should be some kind of tension on the innner cable, to hold it in place when connected. Hope i'm making any sense
    hmmm.....

    Cheers all,

Just got out of the garage
Been taking the front wheel apart, to have a look at the plastic gear. I took a picture of the assembly.

    Re: speedometer

    hey,

Have opened up my front end and have discovered that the lugs on my plastic gearbox drive wheel are tapered. Plus it was full of gew which made the already bad gear connection even worse and more likely to jump teeth.
I have now ordered a new nylon gearwheel drive from wemoto and will fit it in a week orso.
When i opened up the geardrive housing i found 2 shims under the nylon gear, do u have any idea what these are for? They're pretty thin (se pic previous post) and there are 2 of them??
I think it's for reducing axial play in the gear and maybe also a sort of bearingish function.
Let me know what u think of this..

Wi'll post pictures of my new assembly and ofcourse let u know if it's solved.

Thanx and cheers, am of to Berlin in a couple of hours
