    Single Front Disc option

    Hi everyone,

    A couple of questions:

    1. If I removed a front disc and caliper from my @, what would be the difference in braking? I can see that on the face of it, it looks like it would be halved but I donīt think that would be the case. Iīm thinking more of "real world" difference rather than theoretical.

    2. If I went to a single front disc, would fitting a 4-pot caliper make up for the loss of the other disc? Or should I just stick with the 1 disc + standard 2 pot caliper?

    Comments, as always, appreciated

Are you trying to save on brake pads? One thing you can't accuse the AT of is that it's "overbraked".

    Re: Single Front Disc option

I looked at this from the point of view of fitting a set of USD forks (eg) KTM 640 and fitting a 320 mm disc. The maths escapes me but essentially braking stays the same to a point as you have to apply greater force and therefore greater heat biuld up is created.

There is an argument for forks twisting but if set up properly I can't imagine that is an issue.

You could mount a 320mm disc on your hub and fabricate a caliper mount. VFR calipers are a fav of some SM riders.
When I grow up ..... yeah right!

Y'see, I could say "You can go fast, I can go anywhere, Africa Twin" But you buggers have 'em as well so it would sound pretty lame .... oops!

One thing I will say is that I suspect that a 320mm disc with decent caliper would be better than the AT standard brakes.

    Re: Single Front Disc option

Well my mate tried only using a single front brake a few years ago when he bent one disc so much it was eating his pads and caliper. Braking wasn't hugely bad but no one would ride in front of him down hills.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Re: Single Front Disc option

I do hope that the caliper in the picture is the one he WASNīT using

My front wheel has started to rot and will need replacing very, very soon. A friend of mine has offered me a 21" front wheel from a Suzuki DR750 which I should be able to fit with the appropriate spacers. But the DR has only 1 front disc, hence the questions.

    Re: Single Front Disc option

Why not lace the DR rim onto your hub. I am having a DRZ rim laced onto mine as I type. Therefore you keep the brakes and get a new rim. The chap doing mine charges Ģ50 a rim if you are near felixstowe. He has done wheels for me in the past and is rather good.

    Re: Single Front Disc option

That was the original plan. However I spoke to a local wheelbuilder today who told me that, due to the angle of drilling of the rim, the hubs need to be near-as-dammit the same diameter for that to work. If theyīre not then the spokes will bend when lacing the rim. Iīve no reason to doubt what he said, and as I donīt know the diameter of the hubs I thought Iīd ask about some other scenarios - I canīt be lucky enough to find that the hubs are the same diameter!

Speak to the chaps at Hagon. They advised me about the DRZ rim and between us were sure it would fit. Your chap is right to an extent but there is some give in the measurements.

    Re: Single Front Disc option

Thanks mate, Iīll give them a call.

Just found that the wheel spindles on a DR are a different diameter, so the whole wheel wonīt fit
