    Overheating boiling battery rectifier problem

Finally, i have killed my rectifier - think it got a bit hot yesterday. only just managd to start the bike when i was out yesterday, and when i finally got home it wouldnt start off the button - lots of clicking and fizzing noises

took the side panle off and there was a small amount of steam/fumes coming from the battery area

So disconnected it quick and took it outside to cool down. It wasnt boiling, but was very hot to touch.

Looks like i'll need a new batery as well.

Have checked previous threads, but is it any particlar R6 / R1 unit that will fit ????
+ would a Fazer 600 unit do the job - these all seem to have a wiring harness still fitted which i can 'hack about' whereas the r6/r1 units dont.

    cheers ant

I've not seen a Fazer 600 unit used but just 'cos it hasn't been done doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

It looks like just the job:

An approach with the R1/R6 unit is to ditch the Honda connectors and use spade connectors to attach directly to the regulator. As the Fazer 600 unit has wires on it, you could just reuse the existing connectors off the fried unit, that would be just the job.

It maybe worth finding out the alternator output on the Fazer 600 to compare with the AT. Maybe the Fazer 1000 may be a better bet:

Lucky you haven't fried your tacho and CDI by the sound of it.

Cheers Alan, rather than following my usual style of being completely different to everyone else, ive ordered an R1 rectifier. Found some good info on a vfr forum which had good reports on the R1 unit, so see how it goes.

All being well, i'll put some pics up at the weekend (fingers crossed).

Hey Anton, I have not been here for a very long time and just popped in to see what is going on and saw this tread. If your bodge does not work out, I am getting rid of a brand new electrex world R/R for an AT. Details are over in the HUBB for sale section. (I dont know if i am allowed to post a link about a sale.. so i wont. but the post is called FS UK: Honda Africa Twin RD07a parts). Good luck with it.

Re: Overheating boiling battery rectifier problem

Cut out the old rectifier over the weekend, soldered spade connectors onto the wiring and wired up easy peasy - took about ten mins

plugged it in with new battery and hey presto - sorted.

£20 for an R1 rectifier off ebay and £35 for a new battery (sure ive killed the old one )

Seems to be running ok :

Re: Overheating boiling battery rectifier problem

    Hi Balee,

Heres a picture with the terminals that may help you (its from a different bike, but terminals are exactly the same):

The three terminals in a row are for the yellow wires - does not matter what order you fit them in).

Looking at the terminals exactly as above, the left top one is to the battery, and the right top one is ground.

IF you have a spare black wire on an earlier bike, cover this up with isulation tape and DO NOT connect it to the rectifier (Alan H has commented about this elsewhere).

    Hope this helps .

    Ant.

Why are you driving on the wrong side of the road?

    Good work with that R/R
