    Replacement RD03 rear shock

Hi all, I knew my rear shock would need replacing sometime as it didnt look great but in a week where i've rebuilt my front caliper with new pistons, seals, pads and brake line, ordered the bits for the fork overhaul and just received a complete clutch assembly i was out on the Africa twin and after a short ride i parked it up.

I came back about 45 mins later and there was a pool of liquid under the bike underneath an overflow pipe. On closer inspection i realised that it was the overflow pipe from the rear shock and what infact was happening was fluid was leaking from the shock and running down the outside of the overflow pipe

I've seen the rebuild service on e bay but can they do it for that price if the shocks completely foooked ( piston rod scored etc etc).

I have sent an e mail to hagon as they dont list one for an RD03 but i'm sure they can do one but i was wondering will the remote reservoir be the same size and fit where the original one does ??

has anyone fitted an aftermarket one and if so:

    - what make ?

    - how much ?

    - look and fit like the original ?

    - pictures please

    Thanks

Fook me Holla, you're having some problems with this bike aren't you mate ??

I fitted a Fournales air shock to my RD03, it weighs around a third of an oe shock and is fully adjustable via a high pressure hand pump.
    Cost me £400.

I have the oe shock in the shed if you are interested £40 plus postage if you are interested.

    Check out these guys...

ABE Suppliers of High Quality Brake Disks, Fork Stanchions and Shocks - Shocks

I was going to use them for my RD04 but then a new shock came up on eBay for a bargain price. They sounded like they knew their stuff and can rebuild pretty much anything. They can manufacture new damping rods if your rod's pitted too.

Give 'em a call and have a chat.

Wow guys, 3 replies in 10 minutes !!!!

Cabbage, I was expecting the shock to go sometime just not this week. All the other things i was going to do when i strip and repaint the frame but i realise now the clutch cannot wait till then. The bike is a minter so i dont mind spending the money on it. There really wont be anything left to do when i've done all this........................... apart from maybe new rims ??.

can you send me a pic of your shock, is the damping rod in good condition, i'm very interested if its ok. I might just send it straight away to get refurbished rather than it going in another 6 months again.

I'll give ABE a bell and ask them a rough cost to refurbish a genuine shock.

Kjell how much was that thing ?? it looks expensive. I do love my @ ..................... but maybe not that much

They quoted me between £50 and £100 depending on whether they needed to remanufacture a new damper rod or not. They could also do stuff at additional cost like cleaning up the shock body and powder coating the spring too. Normally it comes back looking like it did when it was sent (except that it works again of course).

    Re: Replacement RD03 rear shock

I have Technoflex in mine, I had one also in my ex GS.
I think they are good enough for amateur like me and at least a bit cheaper than Öhlins, and can be rehauled.

I don`t have hydraulic preload setting in mine, it would be a big +.
But as I understand right, it can be added afterwards.
`95 AT Rd07 Technoflex rear shock, Intiminators, Renthal fatbar, heated grips, Polisport guards, Ignitech, ABP header pipes, LeoVince Evo II, wide pegs, H&B racks, Därr boxes, TT tankbag, TT seat, TT headlight cover, bi xenon, SwMotech bars, Pro-Oiler, SuperSprox, aluparts here and there, scraches around. Knobbies.

    G/S project bike.
