    Spare parts?????

    Hi guys

I’ve always wanted an AT and with 2 kids growing up Blah Blah
Anyway I got the next best thing a 650 single (tengai), well that was years ago and I still have the tengai.

Anyway I’m in the market for one now and would like to pose this question to you (the people that should know), what is the spare situation like.

A Guy at work rebuilt a Trans and had a hell of a job getting a back wheel, is that the norm or was he looking in the wrong place.

I am impressed at the mileage of some of the AT for sale 50,000 plus
although I would prefer an older one with less miles.
My tengai is F reg and only just done 21.

    Just thinking out loud

    Cheers

    Rick

    Re: Spare parts?????

    Hi Rick,

Generally parts for AT's are no harder to get hold of than any other Honda (David Silver Spares - HOME are a good starting point), however the wheels are an exception. They're a well documented weak point (they're prone to rot, sometimes from the inside out) which means there aren't that many secondhand ones around in decent condition. When it becomes an issue a lot of people get their old wheels rebuilt (around £200 per wheel) then the problem is solved for good!

There are lowish mileage AT's around, but they're robust bikes and generally handle mileage well.

Don't worry, the AT is an excellent choice of bike, and they go on forever.

Spares, even for earlier ones are still available, and parts suppliers like David Silvers and Wemoto are very good. Personally, I use eBay for practically everything except service items, and OE wheels are always cropping up on www.ebay.de www.ebay.it and www.ebay.fr but the problem is they are one of the AT's achilles heels, so prices and demand are fairly high comapred to other parts. People always seem to treat themselves to a spare set of wheels!

Using your original hubs, good wheel companies will respoke and fit replacement rims in stainless steel or alloy.

It's a great choice of bike, just take your time and get the best one your money will buy.

Using the search button above, also check out OUTPUT SHAFT as well as a few ther things yo need to watch for like wheel and caliper corrosion.
Fuel pumps are sometimes a weak point, but they are easily replaced and I've never had a failure on any of my four AT's.

    Good Luck

    Re: Spare parts?????

My current AT is not far off 90,000 miles, the one before went to 130,000 miles and was still ticking over as nicely as when I bought it new (better in fact as I'd cured the iffy choke).

I sold the last one's frame and engine and kept everything else as spares. The front wheel was horrible (but still solid and is hanging on my garage wall), a rebuild is a much better idea, then you have a wheel that should last forever, barring accidents.

The 130k rear wheel is fine, thanks to a regime of never cleaning it, the grease and gunge has protected it.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    Re: Spare parts?????

Agreed. Apart from the wheels which are a design fault AT bits are plentiful, esp on RD07. My bike is 15 years and rims have just started going with this weird corrosion, something to do with 2 dissimilar metals (AL rims and Fe spokes) which encourages corrosion. Best bike I've had.
