    centre stand spring

My centre stand had rotted. So bad was it that I had to buy an angle grinder to cut through it.

First I put the bike on a paddock stand up the kerb to give me more height to work with.

Eventually it pinged loose and I could knock out the axle.

When it came to fitting the new one I remembered reading how hard it was to get the springs connected and that people had used coins to prize the springs apart. I tried this:

But it seemed a futile way of doing to me - I was simply damaging lots of coins.

So, I gripped the spring with tightened Mole Grips and then used one of those ratchet straps wrapped round the paddock stand at one end and connected to the Mole Grips at the other to pull the spring.

Easy-peasy and I heartily recommend it.

That's either a stroke of genius or cheating. I'm not sure which.

(Actually I'm just jealous 'cos I didn't think of it).

I've kept the spring pulling tool (a long hook type affair with a handle) that came with my daughter's trampoline for just such jobs - dont know how my knuckles will fare though!

Nice (mis)use of kit though, love it.

On Saturday I spent almost an hour trying to get the springs fitted to mine. I broke one screwdriver, bent another and have a black fingernail.

I thought about using a ratchet strap, but don't have one. I think I'll buy one having seen the theory work.

In the end, the spring somehow jumped into place, accidentally. I still don't know why it worked when the previous 53 other attempts hadn't quite done so.

Each attempt stretched it slightly so on 54 it just was easier.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Hi weelie did you also find a way to fit the centre stand without removing the exhaust! As thats the bit that puts me off bying a centre stand.

RD04 stand goes on and off without removing the exhaust.
