Well it ain't the choke!

Not so long ago I posted about the bike surging. I have checked the air filter (clean) I have checked the choke (cable and assembly - also clean) The fuel pump works (although I have no way of telling how well etc) the chain is WELL lubed and has no tight spots and is correctly adjusted. The drive shaft bearing is sound, no movement, nada, zilch, zip, naff all! Plugs are all ok (well one on each cylinder are and there are no indications of fouling) oil is ok and clean ish.

The only thing I can think is that the carbs need balancing.

Any more ideas?

Re: Well it ain't the choke!

I had a similar problem recently and I eventually traced it to the chain and sprockets. I had checked for tight spots, chain tension and kept if fully lubed (scottoiler) but it still lurched noticably at low speeds. I didn't think the chain/sprockets were particularly worn because I still had loads of adjustment left but then it started getting noisy so I bit the bullet and fitted a new set. Result - the noise stopped, and the ride was once again smooth as as @ should be. Not much help to you I'm afraid but it seems like you've tried everything else.

Cush-drive rubbers in the sprocket carrier - had it before on a Harley MT - took ages to find it, but a new set cured it instantly and its worked for someone on here with an @ as well - worth a shot.................

Re: Well it ain't the choke!

Gee I have a possibly related issue, or maybe not it might be normal.

When I give a bit of throttle and release, ie load the drive system up and release, there is a bit more drive lash than I'd like. I have no idea if it's normal or not. There's no great noise but I can detect some noise/lash.

Could be just worn cush drive rubbers at 35,000kms?

Chain and sprockets were replaced by PO. I do have a new chain rubbing block he gave me, guess the old one is still ok since PO didn't actually replace it. I'll have to clean it off a bit to tell.

I think my chain has plenty of slack in it, it isn't tight at all and measures about 1 1/2 inch slack by the MK1 eyeballs.

So first of all, is it normal to have a bit of clack/lash in the Africa Twin drive system?

I guess the reality is I have to disassemble my chain/drive and clean and check everything.

One more thing, I noticed my chain has a master link, should I have this replaced with a rivet type?

Depending on the type of chain he put on, I may replace with an Xring chain because I hate cheap chains and would like to preserve the sprockets as long as possible. He may not have considered that important, since he sold the bike.
