Meant to be very good. Like the AT there are some issues. I asked a few questions in the yamahahaha section when I was looking for an AT/XTZ, if you search my posts you should find the info.
When I grow up ..... yeah right!

Y'see, I could say "You can go fast, I can go anywhere, Africa Twin" But you buggers have 'em as well so it would sound pretty lame .... oops!

I used to work in a Yamaha dealer back in the days, in a sunnier country than this one and I helped rebuild one (Peterhansel mods) 1 year ago. I think i'm allowed to say: DONT BUY IT!!!!!!

These engines are powerfull but not as reliable as the Honda ones (not even half the milage), the frame and the swingarm are made of tin. The "slowers" are horrible and there's no room for anything in this bike. You wont be able to find aftermarket parts easily, such as luggage racks , engine bars, bigger windscreens and lots of other stuff.
The forks in the Africa Twin are s...t, but still, 3 times better than the XTZ750.

Well, basically there is nothing to compare between the 2. If you buy a SuperTenere now, I'll bet money, you'll be selling it in a years time to get an AT.

Yes, it was made an icon due to Peterhansel winning the Dakar several times, but 4/5 that bike was made of reinforced YZ parts and a TDM2 engine.

Cant remember any more faults in the Yamaha, over and out.

    Oh yes...

The old XTZ660 is crap, but still, a more reliable bike than the 750.

    No need to thank...

I've always liked the look of the old teneres too, and didn't realise they were that bad.

For £1500 you should be able to pick up an older Africa Twin in good condition though, perhaps with a bit to spare for accessories. Maybe a bit cheaper again if you don't mind one that's a bit cosmetically rough and spending a bit of time tidying it up.

There's an RD04 in the for sale section for £1400 or nearest offer at the moment (price just dropped by £100 by the looks of things), and they pop up on ebay now and again too (I've seen some nice looking ones go for within your budget in the not too distant past).

If that is the case then I would go fir the Africa Twin, There is nothing like getting a bike in a hurry then realizing it is the wrong one for you.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Yeah, I'm as sure as I can be you'd be able to get a decent RD03 or RD04 for that sort of budget if you keep your eyes open for a while (there's an RD04 in the for sale section here within that budget right now - I haven't seen it in person but it looks in pretty good condition from the photos).

There was an RD07 sold on here not too long back for within that budget too (though it looked like it needed a bit of tidying up cosmetically and was a 1990's model - the most recent rd07/7a models in mint condition usually go for a lot more).

These models are going to be older, so it's worth doing a search here on 'output shaft splines', 'output shaft bearings', and 'rim corrosion' so you know how to identify the more costly problems to correct when you're going to look at any (though those problems won't effect them all - just something to look out for). If you're patient then I think you'll have a very good chance of finding a good one for that price or less.

Have a browse through the old for-sale posts here and you'll probably see several nice examples that have sold in the past for within your budget.

    Sensai,

If you're looking for an AT, there's one in the For Sale section at £1500 -

    http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/sale-wa...rica-twin.html
    Brrrmm - '04 XL650V Transalp in Silver

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

I bought my Super Tenere 2 years ago, I did my homework relating to reliability issues and as preventative maintenance I replaced the regulator / rectifier unit with one from Electrex World and put a new nut and lock washer on the front sprocket.

Luggage wise you can freely buy mounting systems from Givi, Five Star, Hepco & Becker, Tank covers and Tank Bags from Baglux, Screen suppliers - just take your pick and engine bars are available from Rikky Cross Racing.

Well I must admit that after 2 years of Super Tenere ownership I haven’t had a single issue.

It sounds to me as if I may have a rouge one
