Protecting the frame underseat area

Just in the garage (Isn't wifi great) and thinking about how to keep the frame rails under the seat protected, it's obviously an area that gets stone chipped as evidenced by the amount of rust that was there.

I have a few ideas:

- Wrap aluminium duct tape round them
- Wrap black plastic 'duck'(?) tape on them
- Cut up some old inner tubes and either zip tie or superglue in place

Any other ideas? I think it would be silly not to do something at least seeing as it's just been re-painted.

Keep the bike indoors and don't ride it.
That way no stones will chip it.
Are you sure it is stone chip and not just wear and tear form the seat rubbing?

Re: Protecting the frame underseat area

Problem is with the underside if you allow anything in under the tape / innertube it will act like rubbing compound and rust away undetected

you need summit like a high mounted hugger bolted to the frame but not in complete contact, could you fabricate something from PE heat treated to keep clearance

Re: Protecting the frame underseat area

I came across this stuff recently:

Plasti Dip - Flexible air dried coating, Brush Dip and Spray from £5

As snaphappy says it might be a worry about it rusting away undetected underneath it, and it retaining water that can't evaporate, but if it's a painted surface underneath I'm not sure if that would be an issue as long as it doesn't get damaged (not sure).

You can get it in spray cans too. The spray on stuff does claim to prevent corrosion, though how well it works I have no idea.

There are some other videos on there about it too.

Helicopter tape. Like a heavy duty sticky-backed plastic.
We use it at work on the leading edge of wings/ sidepods etc, anything that picks up stone damage.
I've removed the plastic frame guards on my trail bike and put this in place.

To be honest, I'd go the 'car' route and use a dedicated stone chip paint (once the members are properly painted and rust free). It's an area that's mostly covered in mub and doesn't get seen anyway. You don't have to have the bitumen-based stuff either.
