    rad fan

Got a replacement fan off ebay.

Presumably I can connect two wires to a battery to test this (and indeed my other fans). Question is which wires to where?

Chris the green with the eyelet will go to the negative and either of the others to the positive it'll just be bypassing the sender switch

Wrong. Had to connect the other wire that goes into the connector to live and the short one coming out (goes to the switch normally) to negative.

That green wire with the ring on it was a red herring.

Anyway, now I have sussed it, of course the two rads on my twins work fine so this one I bought off ebay is surplus to requirements.

Do me a favour, have a wiggle of the fan blade itself. Mine wobbles about like it isn't even connected, but I've seen it working properly and spinning like a good'n when I was waiting in a slow moving queue for the Isle of Wight ferry a month back. Are they all like that?
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

This one is actually pretty pristine but the ones on my bikes wobble a fair bit.

I think this is off an RD07 as the connector is different to the one I disconnected on the zebra (bad mistake because I cannot reach in to reconnect it so the tank will have to come I suspect).

The danger is you applied logic. That green one with the hook is clearly the earth (it mounts to the frame to earth) and other lead from the connector is clearly the power in.

The thing is the power source is broken until the switch closes so it is the switch connector you have to worry about. That has to go to earth (or negative if just connecting to a battery.

Once I sussed this I was able to test them on the bike just by unplugging the switch connector and wiring it to earth.

    Re: rad fan

I think the fans are on a floating bearing they use the spinning motion to stabilize.

I am talking from my rear so the above may be wrong.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
