RD03 electrics

Here is a electrical schematic showing the ignition circuit for the RD03

And here is a calculation showing the power surge for different combinations.

Nota Primo: I do not at the moment know the exact amount of power requested by the two ignition CDI + the four Ignition coils.
I estimated the power requested to run the engine to be 50W.

Nota Secundo: My calculations is for the non H4 bulb model

If my calculations are right, it will be to tight to run an RD03 with auxillary lights for a longer period.

If you add heated grips, Sat-Nav power supply, etc, then your rectifier will be working overtime,,,

Re: RD03 electrics

I just pulled my brake/tail bulb and it's a 23/8. I have seen tail light bulbs up to 10 watts and as low as 7. I have never seen a 5 watt tail light.

I got a total with dual H4 LO beams of 183 watts full running load. I am figuring the ignition needs about 50 watts, so I could be off.

I don't include signals, brake, or warning lights in my total. Braking and signaling would add 3 X23=69 watts to take total to 252 watts. Under these conditions, especially since the bike is at idle, surely the battery is being sucked of power.

Which is why I went back to a 45/45 watt bulb on one side and on the other side a 60/55 bulb with a burnt out LO beam. So I got only one LO beam of 45 watts and yet still got a great dual beam HI of 105 watts.

I run a GPS and in the winter sometimes heated gear. The heated gear might have to be turned way down in town.

Let us know if you find out the ignition's true power draw.

I just got an Optimate 4 charger and it's very good to tell you condition of battery. Therefore after a run I can plug it in and tell how much the battery is charged. I'll do the same test with to working 60/55 H4s and compare.

The Optimate 4 is a wonderful device and I recommend it highly.

.
I have taken the watt sizes out of the Honda Workshop manual.

Yes, I will investigate the power surge for the ignition further.

Well the PO likely put this bulb in himself then, and a good thing that is too!

I found the 45/45 H4 that was in there really perked up when I put the relays on the headlights.

What is interesting is that the end of those bulbs are clear, no black or grey on the bulb end to block light. I am guessing the reflector is designed for those bulbs as the headlight at night is very nice.

I wonder if one could scrape the paint off the end of a normal H4 bulb?
