speedo malfunction

Any ideas - it juddered and then almost died, recording about half the actual speed.

If it had stopped altogether I'd have suspected a broken cable.

Re: speedo malfunction

I'd guess it might be the nylon gear in the drive unit. It's either worn or seizing up with old grease. Could be the cable, but I doubt it.

Check the clocks by swapping them over between your two AT's

Re: speedo malfunction

Have you had the front wheel out recently? Bent tabs on the metal drive plate in the front wheel can cause the speedo to run erratically.

That bloke is half way to somewhere, but I didn't think it was Scotland!!!!!

In that case, I guess he is farked, unless he gets up really early tomorrow morning and obtains his spares from the hotel car park, where I'm sure there will be a shedload of donor bikes!

Bon Voyage and Good Luck you lot!

Yes Whealie BobA spot on, me to have same problem, just like that out of blue speedo start jumping and then died. Turned out to be nylon gear seized with old grease, so wheel has to come off and good clean inside some fresh lube (grease) and like new…If leave for to long could damage nylon gear and will set you back €19 + p&p there is link gear spdmt honda

Re: speedo malfunction

Cheer guys, My initial suspicion is with Yen as I did the wheel bearings, fork oil and head races, but it can all come off for a clean. I like this solution as it also involves the least amount of work.

But after four days sat on the bike I am in no rush even to go for test ride so it may be much later this week before I venture out into the garage.

From Soho's I made the Lakes, the Hardknott, Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin and London. According to my milometre I have done about 125 miles.

Re: speedo malfunction

Again same problem. Mine had new front tyre on thursday , so will check for bent tabs .
My tripmeter reigistered 5.3miles for TLD.
Have already replaced gearing once , hoping a good clean , straightening of tab will fix with out having to buy new.

Re: speedo malfunction

It had me confused as hell when it happened to me.

I have a large collection of spares so I firstly tried a spare cable, still weird speedo readings.

Then I swapped to a new speedo drive, no cure.

Then I put a different set of clocks on, still the same problem.

The tabs in the hub looked fine, it was only when I compared it to my other front wheel I could see the difference, I must have squashed them a little after putting the speedo drive in in an incorrect position.
