Leaking Water pump on AT

Well amongst all the other jobs of recommissioning a AT that has stood in the garden for three years unstarted is a leaking water pump
Prior to test starting her ( fresh petrol/ carbs cleaned/ car battery on jump leads.)
I checked the water levels ( non existant!)
I put fresh water in and found the system was EMPTY
The reason became obvious, the water is P***ing out of the overflow on the water pump.
Theres no oil leaking/ theres no water in the oil

Its an RD07a model

Is is possible to fit a new seal ( water) to the pump?

Cheers all

PS: I still haven't started the beast, If it sounds really rough I shall make a decision on restoring or Breaking the AT

Dooh

Re: Leaking Water pump on AT

It might be that the water that sat in the bike for 3 years didn't have anti-freeze (or more importantly corrosion inhibitor) and that the alloy body of the pump has corroded.

Don't give up yet, silicon sealant is a most wonderful product, and combined with a new seal, may see the end of the leak.

Personally, I would start the bike without coolant in it, as running it for a minute or so shouldn't hurt I reckon, as long as it has some decent oil in it. Don't rely on the water temp guage, as it only works when there's water in the system. I will atleast prop up your enthusiasm for restoring the bike.

One thing I would do though, once it is watertight is flush the cooling system with a cleaner, just to remove any flaky white corrosion in the waterways.

My RD04 was a stolen/recovered bike when I bought it with 7000 miles on it. The lower plastic coolant pipe had been smashed, and I bought it fearing that the yooofs that nicked it had been running it without coolant.
I replaced the pipe, filled her up with pre-mix, and she's never used a drop or missed a beat!!

There's life in that old dog yet... don't give up hope so soon!

Yep like BobA said, don't give up on it yet. These are small jobs you will overcome. Think of the joy of bringing the beast back into life again.

If you need a replacement pump (and you will if it's pissing out of the pump overflow) I have a used one in my box of spares that may be of some use to you. Let me know.

I may be taking you up on that offer
I can't get back to working on the bike for 4 days ( shift work)
As fast as you put the water in it was running out of the overflow at the bottom
I haven't even had chance to take it apart as yet

Cheers

No probs. Drop me a PM when you've had a look. I'll dig it out of the spares box and make sure it's okay (came from a running bike and didn't leak so should be fine).

Re: Leaking Water pump on AT

Hi I tried to get a seal for Sharrie's @ but taking the pump apart is a mare. It is cheaper to change the pump, and quicker in the long run. but if you do change the pump do not drain the oil until you have fitted a new pump as the drive for the pump sits in the bottom of the sump and the oil runs out.

Re: Leaking Water pump on AT

What you might find, if it's running out really fast, is that the water pump casing where the hose joins may have corroded away and fractured. If it's the seal, it's usually just a tiny trickle or a weep coming out.

What J means is that changing the pump should be done with the oil drained.

Yeah i guessed he meant to say drin th oil out first.
I can't get near the bike for two more days ( I'm on 12hr night shifts)
I guess the pump is U/s from the speed it leaks out!
The water is from the overflow/outlet
