Puncture repair on trip without centre stand?

Hi to All!
I’m getting ready for 2-week trip around Eastern Europe in august and one thing keep bugging me (centre stand)! Well I don’t have one and to be honest never need it, normally for service or repair would use set of paddock stands. So... long story short is it possible repair puncture on side of the road without centre stand or would be wise to splash out 85euro and get one. Anyone have a taught on that?

Val

Re: Puncture repair on trip without centre stand?

Its easy if its a rear you find a big stout stick/branch and push the bike over on its side stand until the rear is off the ground and then wedge the stick/branch either against the frame or the foot peg.

If its a front bit trickier but if you are riding with a friend or partner then get them to pull back on the bars against the side stand (tipping it) until the bike is balanced with the front wheel off the ground then they can either hold the bike on the balance point (its not heavy) or wedge the stick againts the sumpguard to hold the front in place. if you are on your own find a handy tree or wall and tip it over against that.

You will be surprised how far you will have to tip it if you are on your own so best to practice on some grass with some mates before you go just incase it all goes tits up!!

Or if you are out in the wilds partially dismantle a drystone wall to build yourself a centre stand, but make sure you build the wall back up when you have finished.

Of course dont forget with all of these methods to undo the axels and any nuts and bolts before you tip the bike on to the balance point coz if it goes down you will find it almost impossible to get the bike back up on your own, i know it happened to me and it was only a farmer taking pity on me and using his tractor to lift and support the bike was i able to get the job done.

Hi Val,
If your thinking that way just go and get it.Its small money if your on a trip and handy longterm.

Pulling it over on the side stand and proping it up is awkward as wheel is at an angle out & in but you can live with it once your on level ground and can find something to prop it up

All right?!
Thank todd5774 and lam very impressive. I will be travelling on my one so to save hustle worth investing in stand. I will be using slime as well, so hop wouldn’t have to do any repair! We’ll see….Probably and up in tears but that what is all about right--journey.

take a length of rope with you and throw it up and over a strong branch tie it to front or back of bike then pull and take the weight then tie it off or it can be used to pull you out of a ditch or a ridge line for tarp for when it rains and you need shelter. hope your trip goes well.

If you are stuck in the ulu then just put it on it's sidestand, remove the rear nut then lay the bike on its right side and pull the spindle . The wheel will slide out and if your worried about spilling fuel slide the rear brake set off and the bike can be sat on the swingarm without to much fuss......

Re: Puncture repair on trip without centre stand?

I've always found a centre stand to be priceless. But if you haven't got one laying the bike down on it's left (front wheel) or right (rear wheel) then you can get both wheels off.

I've been many places on my AT and my entire tool kit comprises of these. All of the tools are the lightest higesth quality tools on the market and they never leave my bike.
T-6 Ultra Lightweight Combo Tyre Lever - Trail Tools and Essentials - T-6 Ultra Lightweight Combo Tyre Lever - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
24mm and a 19mm (for rear sproket)

Motion Pro Trail Multi Tool Adventure Enduro Off Road MX - Trail Tools and Essentials - Motion Pro Trail Tool - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
With a extra 3/4inch 12,14,17mm socket and a 1/4inch 8mm

T-6 Ultra Lightweight Chain Tool - Trail Tools and Essentials - T-6 Ultra Lightweight Chain Tool - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
With a couple of extra split links for my chain. If you use x-ring the shoe will need a little file down.

and of course a leatherman Surge.

Honestly splash out you won't regret a single item.
