    how strong?

Got a new seat cover from wemoto cos mine is spliting. Question is how strong does the staple gun have to be to get the staples into the plastic. The local hardware store has one starting at 10 euros but the next one up is 42€. will the 10 euro one be enough is it the staples that need to be strong or the gun putting them in

42€ seems like a lot for something I will never use again

    Re: how strong?

Bought an air Staple/Brad gun at weekend in Aldi should do brilliant with 10mm staples...

Jen did try it though on an XTZ750 seat using a hand press staple gun (cheap £10 one) and the staples either didn't penetrate enough or bent..

When I had my seat done a local upholsterer did it including better foam padding for £20.. I just supplied him with my cover (bought from M&P)

I did find this on amazon though, do you think it would do the job?

    Re: how strong?

The electric/air staplers will always be better, they tend to be a lot stronger, will take larger staples and sometimes are also variable..

The first stapler I would avoid, it's the same one as Jen originally tried..

You can also get hammer staplers that you hit the head of with a rubber mallet, they might be cheaper than getting an electric/air stapler

Just check the thickness of the staples some are too thin and will buckle before they get in the plastic I bought a cheapish gun just for my seat uses 6mm staples with 1,3mm gauge

and hold the stapler down flat and hard on the surface that you are trying to staple with a hand stapler, if it is not held down or a bit off the surface the staples will not go in , the stapkle will push the gun back up

    Re: how strong?

I have used the hand held basic stapler for similar things. Repairing caravans where the staple has to pass through thin aluminium sheet and into wood. I found that the staple wouldn`t go fully home but I used a tack hammer to finish them off. OK for a one off job.

I also used it to sucessfully make/cover a seat on a suzuki 250 trail bike. (TS 250 two stroke?). I made a plywood base took the foam out of a three piece suite and bought a replacement seat cover.
These staple guns are used a lot for craft work so you may be able to borrow one and give it a try.

If you are having a problem with the staples going into the plastic base then gently heat up the plastic with a heatgun, they will go in fine then as it cools will grip the staple, Heat a small section at a time.

Another method is to use flange- or pan-head self tappers. That's how I normally do it.

    Re: how strong?

I fitted a Wemoto cover to an AT seat base at the weekend using a handheld staple gun just like the one pictured and had absolutely no problem. You just have to make sure the staples are man enough for the job, the staple gun is easily strong enough, as long as you make sure the material is pressed hard against the plastic when you fire the staple.

One thing which is really worth doing is to fit and stretch the cover properly over the seat base and leave it for a couple of days before you staple it, just to give time for the creases to come out and also to let the material stretch.
