    RD03 problems; fuel pump?

Haven't been riding the AT much but usually it's started fist time, was a bit reluctant recently and then on Tuesday night it packed up. Started OK, with a bit more effort, then would only just tickover, couldn't rev at all; stalled and wouldn't start again.

Haven't had the time to do much investigation other than trying a couple more times without luck; tank topped up so I've definitely got fuel.

Whilst turning it over I tried putting my hand on the fuel pump and couldn't feel anything.

Obviously more stuff to check but anyone know if RD03 fuel pumps are as liable to fail as the later models?

    Cheers
    David

Did you use the choke to start it?

I'd guess that it could be stuck on, so I'd probably make this your first check.

You need to check from the lever, down the single cable to the splitter, and then both of the cables that go to each carb.

It's a bit of a crappy job, but won't cost you anything to do.

    Good Luck

Mine had those kind of symptoms last year when for the first and only time it broke down.... it was dirt in the carbs. I'm no mechanic so it could be something else?

Looks like I still have the original factory fitted fuel pump too and my 650 has not missed a beat since.

    Thanks guys,

Did have the choke lever in pieces changing the clutch lever so will check that first.

I thought I'd read from the various fuel pump thread that the RD03 was less afflicted; will just have to work my way through the fuel system.

There wasn't a lot of fuel in the tank so dirt could also be a possibility, hmmm don't really feel like dismantling carbs right now!

Although it could be the choke lever, it's more likely to be one of the three cables, or where they meet at the splitter.

You don't have to dismantle the carbs at all, the 2 choke cables just screw into each with a plastic knurled nut (DO NOT BREAK IT !!) and the other end goes to the splitter which gets full of water and old grease etc and just seizes up.

    Honestly, I'd check this first.

You'd have to have a seriously low tank, and any gunge should hopefully get trapped at the fuel filter. If your fuel was old and off, it could cause problems as well.

Incidentally, fuel pumps can be encouraged back into life sometimes by giving them a good sharp whack!
