    Africa Twin Tool Kit.

I've just posted this on another thread but thought others might be interested. Over the past years I've tried and tested many tools for adventure bikers. Only recently have I found tools that are so light you wouldn't believe but also are brilliant quality.

I've been many places on my AT and my entire tool kit comprises of these. All of the tools are the lightest highest quality tools on the market and they never leave my bike and fit under the seat.

T-6 Ultra Lightweight Combo Tyre Lever - Trail Tools and Essentials - T-6 Ultra Lightweight Combo Tyre Lever - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
    24mm and a 19mm (for rear sproket) add a 24mm 3/4 socket adapter.

Motion Pro Trail Multi Tool Adventure Enduro Off Road MX - Trail Tools and Essentials - Motion Pro Trail Tool - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
    With a extra 3/4inch 12,14,17mm socket and a 1/4inch 8mm

T-6 Ultra Lightweight Chain Tool - Trail Tools and Essentials - T-6 Ultra Lightweight Chain Tool - adventure-spec.com: Off-Road Adventure Motorcycling gear,UK,enduro, rally, rallye, touring, rtw,mx
With a couple of extra split links for my chain. If you use x-ring the shoe will need a little file down.

and of course a leatherman Surge.

Honestly splash out you won't regret a single item.

I have the multi tool and I have to say I don't like it that much. Sure it looks like it's tidy and neat and you could do anything with it (that's why I bought it) but I find it's the same size as the spanners and screwdrivers it replaces. It's also a bit uncomfortable to use in some of its configurations and the big handle (the square bit) gets in the way.

The worst of it was that after some fairly gentle use it let me down. I was stuck at the side of the road wanting to undo the gear lever and the socket driver shaft just span around in the handle. The shaft is in two parts, pressed together and one side drives the other. When you look at it, it looks like a strange way to make a tool. Racespec replaced it for me but I don't have the same confidence that I have in a simple box or combi spanner.

    To be honest...

WHO would pay this prices for emergency tools?

You could buy a car and travel across the whole of Europe and Africa in it for the price of a full kit, and the car comes with the all the tools...

They're not that expensive at all. Cars have too many wheels. I've never been let down by my tools and they've saved my bacon on a fare few occasions. You can take separates but its all about weight on a bike. A normal chain tool alone can weigh over 1kg by the time you’ve added separate spanners socket drives tyre levers etc the tool kit can hit over 5kg.

Of course if you don’t mind carrying the weight because you prefer to take old heavy tools it up to you. The most important things about adventure travel is having things you trust. I wouldn’t leave home without my lightweight tools.

I can't vouch for the other tools but the central hinge on my Leatherman snapped in two after just 2 months light casual use. To be fair, Leatherman refunded my money immediately and offered me another one but I put my trust in Victorinox after that.

That just proves it's all down to a little luck as well. I changed my Victorinox Swiss army tool for a Leatherman because it failed for me in the Pyrenees.

I have a leatherman surge and have used it most days for over a year now and it's great never let me down, in fact i would go so far as to say it's the best tool I have ever bought and I'm a so called engineer by trade
