    Jumping out of 5th gear

HI guys the tital says it all but I will give some back ground info as well. I am traveling town to Oz so overlanding with a fair amount of gear and a set of tires, but riding solo. Twice now on slight up hills under medium load/throttle she has jumped out of fifth gear and into a false neutral, (not 'neurtral' between 1 and 2.) then clicks back in easly with my toe. I am 90% sure I have not been knocking the gear leaver, and defently not holding the cluch. The bike is a 2001 RD07a with 10,600miles on it so pretty new. and in goopd over all condition.
Has anybody else has this as I am turkey about to head into Iran so if I am going nto have problems I would like to fix it here before I cross the boarder.

    Thanks alot, George

Obviously, splitting the engine, or even taking the sidecases off is the last thing you want to do, so I'd check the following first.

Clutch cable, is it adjusted correctly with right amount of free-play, and is the cable working freely and not binding.

Drive chain adjustment, too loose or too tight could affect gear selection because of chain lash back through the drivetrain. I'm sure you don't need to be told that chain adjustment is crucial on an AT, DO NOT make it too tight!

Engine Oil, are you using the correct type for the bike and your current environment?

These are just basic ideas before you start delving deeper, and spending time and money.

    Good Luck

My last two ATs used to sometimes not go properly into 5th when acelerating. I got into the habit of doing it twice just to make sure. The bikes both went to high mileages with no gear box problems so maybe it is just a quirk of the bike.

My current AT doesn't need the double tap oddly.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Thanks guys, I think it might have been that I had changed gears on the slope and both times acclerating so that might just be it. I will just put it down to a quirk of the bike for now!

Jon, yes I will be flying the bike down to Thailand from Nepal in about Febuary, so you up for a beer!
