Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

    Hello !

I have some problems with a RD03 : some time ago one of the CDI units burned . The engine runed perfect until then(30.000 km after I bought it), so I concluded that it just broke. I ordered a new one and instaled it , not on the same place ( same line ) with the broken one , but on the other one , just for avoiding burning the new one in case that the electric line had problems . All good and nice . The engine worked perfect as before . After 1000 km it failed again on the same line ( the second old CDI ) . I have to mention that thay just ceased to work , with no warning . If the first time at was at home in my garage , the second time at was at 500 km away from home and it was not ok . Now I want to change the induction coils and to check all the electrical wiring for a shortcut , although the posibility is low. For that please tell me if you know where I can find new RD03 ignition coils. I tried on wemoto and could not find them . Or maybe you can tell me what Honda Transalp models have the same ignition coils with A.T. RD03 and a site where I could buy(new coils). I mention that I charged the batthery with an improvised electrical dispositive, before the first CDI burning. The regulator(rectificator) is ok, the CDI connection are ok (there wasn't intermitent misfire).

    Thank you !

    Alex

I'd be very suspicious of the wiring to that CDI since it was the same position went bad twice. If you see any wiring where it plugs in that looks bad, replace it. Clean the contacts and make sure there isn't a broken wire that's intermittent.

I've heard people talk about CDI units going bad and I've seen one fix where you saw the back corner off and resolder the main connector.

All I can say is there are a bunch of fragile looking wires that plug into a CDI and they could be the problem all along. Could be when you replace a unit you disturb the wires - it starts working again. Somewhere down the road it stops working and another unit gets replaced, etc.

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

Hello Alex, and Welcome to the Forum!

My suspicions would still be with the Rec/Reg unit, so I would check this again, or get a garage to test it if you are unsure.

There can be a problem with the RD03 CDI units if they touch the bottom of the seat, and this will cause excessive strain on the connectors which often makes them fail as they are broken away from the circuit board inside the CDI. There is a repair here...

With regard to the coils, RD04 coils are the same, and I guess those on the Transalp will be too. Your best option is to source some on eBay, and German, Italian, and French eBay are often better than UK eBay.

    Good Luck

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

If it's pickup coils rather then the ignition coils you are looking at replacing, they are different on the RD03 and RD04. Part number for RD03 is 30300-MS8-000

When an RD04 pickup coil starts to fail, they usually misfire on one cylinder when the engine gets hot and then start working again once it cools down. After a few times doing this, they stop working altogether. I expect the RD03 would be similar.

As BobA says, the usual suspect when CDI's go pop is the regulator/rectifier so check your charging voltage. Hopefully it's just a connector playing up somewhere or a cracked solder connection on the CDI itself.

    Good luck.

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

    Hello,

    Thank you for answering.

@BobA I appreciate your greetings and I'm glade to meet you, all. I knew the link you posted but I have a different and curious problem. I tried the method on the link without any results. Anyway, I'll replace a part of electronics after the complet checking of electrical.

My big problem now is that I didn't find new ignition coils. I verified the part number AlanH send me, but I think there's from CDI unit. Please indicate me a place I can buy new ignition coil. On ebay I found only used coil.
I found this site, but i don't know that the coils are matching:
    12v Twin Lead Points Type Ignition Coil 713612 - Suitable for Honda C 50 C 50 C 50 (Cub) C 50 (Economy Cub) CB 50 CF 50 (Chaly) MB 50 (MB5) MBX 50 MT 50 (MT5) MTX 50 NB 50 (Aero) NC 50 (Express) NE 50 (Vision) NS 50 (Melody) NS 50 (Melody Deluxe) SA

Another problem is that I didn't found a manual for RD03.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Sorry, when you said "the induction coils" I thought you meant the pick-ups. They are inside the engine and that part number is correct for them:
    generator assy p honda

    I don't think it's coils - pickup or ignition.

CDIs failing is usually as a result of overvvoltage from a regulator/rectifier fault or mechanical damage from the seat pressing on the connectors and cracking them inside the unit. Ignition coils and pickup coils are generally pretty reliable and will not damage a CDI if they break.

What is the battery voltage at 5000rpm with the lights off?

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

    Hi,

@ AlanH I verified the links you indicate me and found the parts number and the parts I search. I can't tell you the voltage of battery at 5000rpm because I measure that between the firs and the second CDI's burning. Anyway, the voltage was between the limits indicated about Honda (13.3-15.5V). Now, I can't start the engine in one CDI. I'll post on the thread the evolution of repair. Thank you for the links, Alan!

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

As far as I know the RD04 Ignition coils will work on an RD03, the RD07 coils will not.

If I were to guess, the early Transalps could also work, since they have CDI-boxes that work perfectly in the RD03.

Re: Ignition coils on RD03 (CDI burned)

    Hi again!

I ordered on eBay an regulator rectifier for an XRV 650:

XRV 650 RD 03 REGLER AFRICA TWIN GLEICHRICHTER RD03 bei eBay.de: Markenspezifische Teile (endet 08.11.09 17:03:40 MEZ)

The problem is that a black wire is missing (the one in the middle of the 6p connector ). Besides this, everything fits. I would like to know if anyone had this problem, and how they fixed it.

On the schematic of the xrv 650 wiring, the black wire was powering several electrical devices and I believe that without this wire those devices won't function.
    Thank you, Alex
