    Re: Fuel starvation part 2

Well it’s done it to me again, I took a ride out the other night and normally it takes me 20mins to get home from Broughton...............1.5hrs later , it cut out on me 31 times on the way home (I counted the places I had to pull over on the way home from work today).
I’ve just put the bike back together, so far I’ve :- fitted a Facet fuel pump (just tested that into a container and the flow looks fine), replaced the fuel filter, removed the tank and checked the fuel tap and filter, Drained both float bowl, renewed both spark plugs.
The odd thing is that it could run perfect for a mile then cut out, then half a mile or less before cutting out again. When I fire it up again (after about 4mins) it sounds like its only firing on one (hence the new plugs) then it might pick up and shoot off.
Previous to this the bike was running sweet as a nut for about 30miles. Maybe it is something to do with the amount of fuel and gravity etc I just dont know.
I’m just glad it didn’t cut out half way across from Piel.
Has anyone got anymore ideas before I book it in to a garage?

    Re: Fuel starvation

Basic rule of motorcycle mechanics. If it doenst work properly, its either fuel or electric...

After cleaning the whole fuel system, tap, pre-filter, fuel filter, new pump, clean carbs, testing for proper fuel flow... it can only be electric.

The best way to get to the bottom of this would be to have another bike close by and spend one afternoon changing bits and testing. CDI, fuel pump cut off relay, coils...and so on.

When the bike cuts off, you need to check for spark in the plugs on both cylinders. If it's there...its fuel.

    Hope this helps

    Desertjoe

The 2 breathers are clear, Ive just today spoke to the Mechanic at Lancaster Honda (very helpful) and that was the first thing he suggested, he ses i should try cleaning out the jets in the carbs, as a bit of dirt could be getting in, failing that the pick up coil, HT leads and caps, so i'll try that.

    Cheers Mike

    Re: Fuel starvation

I am not a mechanic but I do remember that if its a spark issue (Electric) and the bike comes to a running stop then there is usually a heavy smell of unburnt fuel in the air/exhaust area. Not so if the problem is no fuel (starvation). Is the pump breaking down? what part no' is on the Facet. There are different models of Facet, with different pump rates which Im sure your aware of. Forgive if Im stating the obivous here but I have just replaced my Honda (Mitsi) pump with a Facet (older black plastic) pump. I went for a short spin on the day and also out today 25 miles with no probs. But your tale has me re-worried. Weekend will confirm for me though.Long run planned for sat/sun and I shall see. Please keep us posted on your progress as will I.

    Re: Fuel starvation

Still Baffled ............Bought 2 gallons of juice poured one in the tank and put the other in the top box. 1/2 mile later it cut out so I waited (yet again), set off and it cut out after another 1/2 mile. this time i was prepared......tried a spare plug in both plug caps, 2 electric shocks later and the sparks are proved ok.......whipped the hose off and turned the engine over...petrol everywhere - nice flow from the pump so thats OK, Put everything back together and poured the second gallon of juice in the tank, this took me quite a few miles with no problems so I pulled over and turned the tap to reserve (thinking it could be faulty) and this took me all the way home 5 miles ish with no problems.

Ive just taken the pump off to check the number, It says on the pump Listed 574A then there is another number but the first couple of numbers are unclear but the rest is 72/245*95/54*0535*00 whatever that means ? Im 100% sure I ordered the 40105 but cant see this on the pump, maybe it was the wrong pump in the box, also just checked the wiring Black to Green and Red to Blue/Black.

Summer will be fading away soon, has anyone got any ideas and do these numbers on the pump look right.

    Cheers Mike

    Re: Fuel starvation

cant see all the numbers on mine but ends like yours in *0535*00. If your desperate, by-pass the barsteward & fill her up, use tripmaster 3 (minus), should get 150mile from her, good luck.
