    Re: Fuel starvation

Ha Ha yes its the correct pump (not from the XRV shop) see thread I subscribed to in Dec 08

Re: OEM fuel pump packed up at 38k miles
I have found a facet fuel pump for £31 at http://www.temple-tuning.co.uk does anyone know what size outlets 6, 8, or 10mm, my AT has only done 7500miles and the original pump is ticking like mad,

Its definately the right one and fitted with the arrow pointed foreward as in the pic, the reason i replaced it was because of the same problem with the original Honda pump, but i think ive probably just kept it topped up so its not had a chance to get to the cut out point.

Good shout though as it did cross my mind

there is a bike mechanic round by me whos semi retired and supposed to be good, so im going to get his number and he can have a look, hes just sorted my mates AT and that was electrical.

    Hi Mike,

Been following your woes, you must be fed up. I have a suggestion to find out whether it is the electrical supply to the pump which is the culprit. Get a 12volt bulb (5w taillight is suitable) and solder a couple of wires to the contacts. Attach one to power supply to the pump, the other to earth and tape/tie-wrap/fix in an ingenious way the bulb to handlebar. Ride 'til bike cuts out: if bulb goes out, power supply fault. If still lit, pump or carb problem. I have a couple of such bulbs with croc clips on the wire ends: they are great for tracing intermittent faults as you can see them while the fault occurs. Its difficult holding multimeter leads on at 60mph.

    Good luck.

Yea your right i am fed up, nice idea ill see if i can rig something up. I was talking to the mechanic of Dan Stuart's today (Dan just came 6th in the TT) and explained my woes to him, he was baffled too and ses sounds like fuel, if i cant sort it then he will have a look and do some tests.

    Cheers Mike

    Re: Fuel starvation

Well i've tried the bypass suggestion with a piece of 10mm copper pipe and there was no change.

So ive removed the carbs and they are off for a clean and check.

Hopefully they will be back before the weekend and hopefully this has been the problem.

    Re: Fuel starvation

Now you've posted the pictures, I can see the problem. It's oxygen starvation caused by the lack of any dirt weighing your bike down. For God's sake get some crap on it, you're embarrassing me into cleaning mine.

    Re: Fuel starvation

    Hi Mike,

I've been following your thread since I had somewhat similar problems with mine. Turned out to be a ¤#"¤%& vacuum hose from the rear cylinder that had to be plugged. the line went to the Mikuni fuel pump from the rear cylinder.

I could go somewhere between 500m and 5 kms and then the bike would bog down and act like it was going on one cylinder. Like yours.

Here's a cell phone shot of the place the hose is fitted on the rear cylinder looking (left side of bike)

and here's the super high tech solution to all my problems

from your photo it looks like there's a black gizmo fitted on the brass outlet on the rear cyl. manifold. It's maybe worth checking if that is tight and doesn't let in any air... Also, I've read post from people that had a Scottoiler mounted and they also got some weird fuel-ish problems so if you have one installed make sure all connections are good.

    Re: Fuel starvation

Well I gave up and took it down to Bridgegate Motorcycles (let the experts sort it), they tried a pump from an R1 and rode about on it all day "It didnt miss a beat". The Facet fuel pump I fitted (which was the correct one by the way) was overheating and cutting out. this could of been a dodgy pump or maybe some crap had found its way in (dont know how though). So I had a new one delivered to the garage for them to fit. Ive just come in from a 50mile ride and its sorted.
What a waste of a summer, that pump had only done about 1000miles so wasnt really on my hit list. It just shows what a fresh pair of eyes can do.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help, It was the new ish pump that threw us all.

    Cheers Mike

    Re: Fuel starvation

Glad to hear this is finally sorted. I'm betting they sent you the wrong pump.
As a lesson learned to others one should always check the numbers stamped on the brackets (should be 40105) before cutting them off.

OR. It was the correct pump and you simply got a bad one which would be very rare.
