Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

Just posted images of re-build and paint botch on my flickr site bro.

Hammerite paint should go straight on (VHT paint is the only paint that needs curing with heat not hammerite)

Are you spraying onto a surface that's perhaps a little damp with condensation? If the bike is in a shed and you pop the heater on, you'll cause a surface of moisture.

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

Just posted another batch of pics up. Need your expertise guys. Started bike today so almost there. Went to fit front sprocket and it doesn't seem to want to go on. Now the gearbox for this engine was bought of the web and came off a RD07. I was told by the person selling that all the gearboxes were the same regardless on the RD number. Is this so? Or, will I need to buy another front sprocket??
I have enclosed a picture of the front sprocket I bought as a replacement for the mangled one that originally came with the bike.

    Cheers

    Mike

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

That's the correct sprocket for an RD07 or 7a and I imagine for the 04 as well. Sometimes they just don't seem to want to fit and then they just slip on unexpectedly. I guess its just a matter of getting it lined up perfectly straight.
I've never tried this but maybe heating it just a little on a radiator or in the oven at minimum temperature will expand it just enough to help it slip on. Just don't lose patience with it!

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

This thread is better than any soap.

I've just been out to the shed, i have a spare @ box and a new sprocket.

Tried to measure the shaft with my digital vernier, but flat battery, is'nt technology great?

Anyway i used the vernier as a caliper and then measured the shaft, this came out as 27mm, plus the new sprocket is a snug fit, i had to initially tap it on. Did you buy a genuine cog or a "pattern"?

    Here's the pics....

    Hope this is some help.

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

Something in the cobweb strewn area of my memory reminded me that I tried to fit a Honda RD03 front sprocket, which looks the same, onto an RD04 shaft, and it didn't go on! If it's not just a problem of a tight fit (Ooh Matron!) check your part numbers and make sure it's not an RD03 sprocket.

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

Sully, you were right to say line it up properly.

Fiddled with it (sprocket, calm down) and just didn't want to fit so I rotated it one tooth at a time and for some reason it just seemed to catch at one point. Just to be sure i repeated the procedure and same thing again. Would not go on except for this one point!!

Gave it a little tap with a plastic mallet and 'success'

With a bit of luck I might be able to give her a test ride tomorrow.

    Cheers Guys.

Re: Stripping and Rebuilding Do & Do not

In the middle of putting the front sprocket back on at the moment 15:20pm Sun.

Just checked my haynes Manual for torque setting and there's about 30+ pages missing from the manual!! (This is a new book).

Anybody know offhand the setting please.

    ****FINISHED*****

    'I hope'

Got everything back on tonight and once the petrol had been pumped through, the engine started first time..
Bit late to road test her tonight but will try to get some images of her tomorrow plus take her for a local spin (just in case).

I'm sooooo looking forward to being back on the @T again.
