Wow cheers for the fantastic replies, im still having a little bit of an issue, the spark plugs, they are still carbon fouling but the choke seems to be working as it should now, so there is definitely an over rich air to fuel ratio. Man its starting to frustrate me, especially getting the very front deep spark plug out. What be the secret with that one? I also dont have a shed which makes working in the wind, rain, coldness and darkness really difficult (I dont know how you Europeans do it). Has anyone or does anyone know someone who has some space in a garage in Central or the outskirts of London so I can wrap my head around the mechanics of the AT. Im kind of desperate for someone to show me the ins and outs of this bike before i head on my trip from London the Australia early next year. If anyone is able to help me and spend some time sharing their love for the AT with me, your time and efforts would be so greatly appreciated. Mr Mardy

3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Choke issues are sometime the bane of AT ownership.

What you need to do is check the entire choke mechanism from the lever, down the single cable to the splitter where two cables emerge to go to each carb.

In my experience, the splitter is the usual culprit, as it collects moisture and crud, and the grease or whatever lube the factory puts in there make it all seize up. It is possible to clean and work in fresh lube, but you do have to take your time to work it into the cables. It may be better to replace the cable!

The next area is the springs and plungers. Again, these seize.

The parts you need to be VERY careful with are the plastic knurled nuts/retainers which hold the choke cables and plungers into the carbs. These get brittle and break, and it'll cost you £45 atleast if you do lose or break one.

The parts you need to look at are numbers 8 (x2) in the pic. This is where the choke cable passes into the angled tube 21, and then through the knurled nut.

The choke cable is in this one, item number 4

    Bob or anyone else,
How do I go about buying a new choke set up, On the workshop weekend I pulled it right apart and one of the springs was rusted through, but the rest was working ok, can i get a replacement spring or do i need to get the whole plunger bit plus a cable? Wemoto and honda dealers dont state if the plungers actually come with the cable. I have sent off emails to them but as of yet no reply. Its an expensive piece. What should I do?
    Cheers mate
