Smile Yes another choke question RD07S

    Hey there,
ON my recently acquired AT I have choke issues, i have lubricated the cable but does not fix the challenge at stake. Im after some info on how to dismantle the plunger out of the carbi to further my investigation. In looking at the Haynes Manual they show a nut to unscrew and then you simply pull the plunger out. Not so simple, mine does not seem to have that nut to unscrew at the end where it meets the carbi. I think they show a 650.

I realise the choke is delicate and dont wont to break anything cause it costs.
    Can anyone help me out.
    Cheers Marty

Hello Marty & welcome to the forum.

Choke issues are sometime the bane of AT ownership.

What you need to do is check the entire choke mechanism from the lever, down the single cable to the splitter where two cables emerge to go to each carb.

In my experience, the splitter is the usual culprit, as it collects moisture and crud, and the grease or whatever lube the factory puts in there make it all seize up. It is possible to clean and work in fresh lube, but you do have to take your time to work it into the cables. It may be better to replace the cable!

The next area is the springs and plungers. Again, these seize.

The parts you need to be VERY careful with are the plastic knurled nuts/retainers which hold the choke cables and plungers into the carbs. These get brittle and break, and it'll cost you £45 atleast if you do lose or break one.

The parts you need to look at are numbers 8 (x2) in the pic. This is where the choke cable passes into the angled tube 21, and then through the knurled nut.

The choke cable is in this one, item number 4

    Hey Bob,
Cheers for the quick reply, I check my choke plunger out again and I dont seem to have the plastic knurled nuts/retainers as shown on No. 21. It seems to have the curved plastic piping adjoining a longish plastic nut (10 to 15mm) then another plastic part conecting the whole thing to the carbi. It is definitely different to the one you had pictured. When i try and turn the nut with a spanner it seems to move the whole plastic bit, it is in such a tricky spot to get a shifter at and i cant actually make half a turn with the spanner. So what do you reckon is the next plan of attack?

Would you also happen to have a electronic copy of the manual with all the drawing, pics etc.

    Cheers for your help.

Copyright law means electronic copies of the Honda manual cannot be distributed on the forum.

The Tech section, up in the top right of the screen has all the fiches and parts numbers you'll need. Here is a quick link HERE

    Good Luck

    hi smokeyman.
on the 650 alps I just release cable at bar end nad wit hlong nosed pliers pull the long plastic shield exposing the lower cable and then spray some anticorrosive stuff [ACF50] into it and leave then spray more reattach and , voila!! choke smooth and sweat do this every spring and mid winter for trouble free use.

As stated the water [rain] runs down the cable to lowest point [carbs] and rusts bad design but atleast it can be fixed unlike other bikes

The small plastic nuts are a real pain to remove thats why I loosen cable.

you need to remove your petrol tank and the whole air box to get at the front and rear choke assembly
you need little fingers to unscrew the plastic nut
be very careful as each assembly ( as pictured in this link) costs £51.95 plus vat from mr honda
the little ( bic biro) springs rust and the pile of rust makes the choke stick.
The 750 ( RD07 and RD07A) should look as pictured that is unless somebody has put the wrong assembly into your bike?

    good luck

There's no nut, the whole plastic choke body turning sounds right to me. Also only being able to get the spanner on it for a fraction of a turn sounds about right too. The slightest variation from keeping it straight when turning can snap the plastic part very easily, I reckon the heat makes it brittle after a few years.

I'm so glad I just got rid of the whole thing, no choke to worry about at all these last few years.
