RD04 - Fuel Pump help for the afflicted..

OK, hands up, I'm probably being a bit thick but I picked up my RD04 a couple of weeks ago and still have a couple of weeks warranty left from the garage so I've 'tinkered' and not done anything too drastic knowing that if anything goes wrong between now and then...they'll pay.

BUT given that the bike has done 50k and it looks like the original fuel pump on there, and having read through all the comprehensive threads giving info on here I'm readying myself for the fact that it'll be the first job on my list to check/repair/replace it.

The thing is, is this a seat off, fuel tank off job just to get to the pump? On mine it's hidden behind the rear shock adjuster and snugly next to the air 'thing' and there's no way, unless I grow double jointed rubber fingers that it's easy to get to !! ...and then I see a post with AlanH saying it's an easy job and takes 3 mins !

OK I know it's blatantly obvious but I'm new, have a heart just a bit of direction to send me humbly on my way...and no abuse please .

    Thanks all....

Are you looking at the fuel pump or the remote reservoire for the shock absorber?
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Definitely the pump - it sits hidden in behind the reservoir shown here (cribbed from another post) -

I guess it's a case of getting the reservoir out of the way and pulling the pump through - unless it's easier any other way

Well i can say its a fiddle but undo the remote res out and just move it out of the way and then you will see it alot better.I have just done mine on the RD04 like yours. But the Facet pump that i got from fleebay was a different type to the one the recomend on here.More my fault than anything. But i fitted it on a bracket with rubber mountings a tight fit but it works ok.Go to it man im sure youl win.Roger.Let us now how you get on.

Thanks Roger - I will indeed go for it, then no doubt I'll become an expert!!

I've seen the threads on here with the 'fix' using a separate relay, and Wemoto sell the replacement part with new contacts so I'd like to try and preserve a bit of originality and fix the existing rather than replace with new.

If that doesn't work I'll go the Facet route.

Given the mileage I just think I'm on borrowed time before I stutter to a halt one day so tiem to nip it in the bud.

    Bloodied fingers here I come

Personally, I'd have to say "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

    I've had 3x RD03's and 2x RD04's and I've never had a faulty fuel pump.

If you're concerned, buy yourself a spare pump and carry it, or atleast a hose joiner for bypassing the pump.

Re: RD04 - Fuel Pump help for the afflicted..

search on here as I put up a post earlier in the year about how to do it.

I changed mine in preparation for a long trip away from Europe so I needed to be sure. No need to remove seat or tank just the reservoir and lots of fiddling about but no more than 2 hours work in total.

    BobA, Lam

Fair point! I guess when you trawl through the pages of the forum there's a risk of unnecessary worry but you're quite right, I won't fix what ain't broke, but will get hold of a spare.

    Chris
Thanks for your input, I'll have another search around.

Thanks for your help all.....kind of puts my mind at rest
