Re: FAO: Those who have disconnected the choke

My bike (different is some ways from yours) has a short breather pipe from the carb set and from there fuel evaporates leaving the bowls empty, but that takes a few days to happen. They've sorted that in your model by connecting the breather hose to another one at the bottom and then back up again. You should know what I'm talking about , once you had to rebuild it.

Appart from that, I believe that the OEM fuel pump didnt allow fuel to come back into the system, but not sure about FACET ones, because they let petrol through when off.

Again, once petrol is in the bowls, there is no way back into the system, unless evaporates or leaks through the drain hose.

Hmmmm, thanks mate - I'll re-check the carb pipework then, to be sure.

Well, I've just checked the spark from the plugs - nice healthy bright blue

While the tank was off, I un-screwed the blanking plates holding the choke plungers in place to activate the choke mechanisms, but it still didn't want to fire.

Took her out for a run yesterday (Had to take a hot air gun to the engine for a bit to get even a cough, but it fired after about ten minutes.) She pulled like a train, with the lovely dense cold air So I thought it would be easier to start today.

Tank back on and still didn't fire up, few coughs but nothing more.

Will have to get hold of a tester/multimeter from work and check the ignition before I go near the carbs.

Re: FAO: Those who have disconnected the choke

Can someone confirm that unscrewing the blanking plates slightly will activate the choke? And that normally you want them screwed in as far as possible?

If the plunger/spring mechanism was to be removed entirely from the carbs, would the choke be on fully?

Still a pig to start. Will check valve clearances next, I have read that if they are too tight that can cause hard starting. Tried to get them bang on before I put the engine in so maybe went too far.

Anyone want to buy an AT? Fully restored, light use afterwards

Re: FAO: Those who have disconnected the choke

Sort of correct - the plungers must be fully pushed in AND the cap bolt tight HOLDING the plunger in position. Opening the bolt may not work exactly the same as putting on choke as it let's air in - pulling on the plunger doesn't do quite the same - have a look down the plunger tube and see the airhole - this is blocked it I remember when the choke is activated
