    New Africa Twin Marathon

    Hi Dear All,

Firstly sorry for my bad english... I'm french

Just would like to present myself and my AT Marathon first series.
I bought it last saturday in a "normal" condition... but I will do all my possible to rebuilt it into his original look "Marathon" as in 1988-1989 when she participated to the Dakar under the number 146 (this number is still marked on some parts of the bike).

In my avatar you will be able to see her in 1989.

I already contacted Jason about the rear panels and side tank cover. I will have now to found out a rear tank and 2 wheels (i asked me if the special wheels of the Marathon are not coming from another cross model or something like this ??!).

    Cedric

Hello Cedric and welcome to the forum

You know that you have a very special Africa Twin model, so many members will be asking you for pictures soon, so please get some posted up for us!!

I was not aware that the Marathon bikes used special wheels, but some of the more informed members may correct me on this.

I would especially like to see pictures of the rear tank you have located as there are a few of us that would like to replicate these if possible.

    Some members that will probably be along with special interest are;

    Kjell Lindberg
    Kitped
    Farmboy
and a few others who's names escape me.

Can't wait for the pics of this special bike

Oh, and your English is very understandable, and is better than some English people, and better than my French, so no problems there!

    Cheers

    Bob

    Re: New Africa Twin Marathon

Ahhhh!! How lucky you guys are to find one of these machines.

As You already know, there were two editions of the 650 Marathon.

As far as I know, the rear rim was wider, compared to the standard RD03.

The RD04 happens to have a wider rear rim when compared to the RD03.
You could check if the RD04 and the Marathon 650 uses the same rear wheel width.

    This is a good website:
    AFRICA TWIN MARATHON - HOME

    The rear fuel tank:

These parts is basically what makes the Marathon different from the standard RD03, (shown at the bottom of the page):

    MARATHON 650 1a serie

or serie 2, (shown at the bottom of the page):

    MARATHON 650 2a serie

    You could try and contact

and see if they can assist you with more information.

I can only congratulate you to your purchase, and envy your good fortune to find one of Hondas great works desert racing classics.

I think all efforts to put the bike back into its former racing glory will be rewarding.

    Re: New Africa Twin Marathon

Thks a lot Dear Kjell for your message.
This website is very helpfull to get some precious informations.
My AT is one of the first serie and participate to the Dakar with R. Auvray. I'm in touch with him .

About the rim and as I know, there were reinforced. I know someone who have another Marathon and I'm waiting on the rim details. With the ref. I will try to contact D.I.D. to get somemore informations about.

Now about the rear tank, it will not be easy to find one... But... Who is searching will find .

Thks again for your congratulation and be sure that I will do my best to find the missing parts

    Ced
