Solved the problem.. Took the centre stand back off the bike and used a disk cutter to take off the plates that are welded onto the top of the stand pipes.

Drilled a hole in the bottom of each leg to drain any water that gets inside.

By taking off those top plates the bike stand is now brilliant. It is slightly forward of vertical and totally stable.

I know that your going to get all the road crud and moisture inside the tubes but at least it now does its job 'properly'.

Cut some more plates and weld them over the ends just a bit further down from where the originals were. The pressure on those tube ends is immense as the bike clunks onto the stand and, without the plates, the tubes won't last very long.

Easy to take off again as I've not put the springs back on yet. Sounds good. Perhaps weld some washer type thing'ys inside the entrance to the tubes. Otherwise your just increasing the hight again.
    Cheers Alan.
