Very bright and popping bulbs usually means regulator rectifier is dead.
Just reading though the diagram and I have a question, when it says

connect the red multimeter lead to the rectifier red wire, leave the rectifier attached to the bike

does it mean discoonect the wires of the rectifier or leave them connected and if I leave them connected how do i connect the multimeter lead to the red wire

sorry if a dumb question, just dont want to zap all my electrics

    cheers

Leave the connector that connects the rec/reg to the loom connected, and push the red lead of your multimeter down the back of the connector terminal.

You're trying to measure the voltage on the red wire, so it needs to be connected and running.

MAKE SURE your battery is fully charged so you can be sure the results are accurate.

You can safely buy a genuine Yam/Suzuki used one as they are very robust. In the UK you can pick them up for £20 to £30 - loads cheaper than a new XRV one. I'd never trust a used XRV one.

ran through the diagnosis chart and the result was that the charging system is fine, it sits at 14.39 when on 2500 revs then at 5000rpm it drops to 14.26, then when i turn the lights on it drops to 12.14 and stays there, then when i rev it goes up to 12.5, so looks like i just had a dead battery. It has spent time this year when the bike has not been turned over or ridden for over a month and regulary goes a fortnight without use(i work from home and am very busy workwise).

So prognosis is to ride my bike more often.

just gutted that i thought the lights where killing the battery, so took for a little spin round the block on tuesday and got stopped and fined 105€ for riding without lights on.(was daytime but law says must have lights on all the time)

    that will teach me.

Anyway is there a way to wire up the bike so lights come on when the engine is started, not just ignition turned on..

    thanks

speaking of rectifiers any recommendations on alternative rectifiers...

Originals by Honda cost about EUR 220..which is exorbitant by any scale..

Some recommend LAMBORDINI s rectifiers w/o problems...

And there are Taiwanese and Chinese versions which cost about EUR 20 max.

I had seen one AT burned to its rims because of a rectifier related fire...yet I have no idea if it was the original rectifier...

    comments svp!
