No rebuild, not much fuss, a steady hand and most of an afternoon. Just fitted new chain and sprockets today, same shaped splines, unbroken and in place. Output shaft. Done.
Wow. That's hard to believe..but if you said it worked..well then.
So the sprocket is actually riding on the Quicksteel and does not chip it away? Crazy man.

    I looked the stuff up.

The bit that doesn't add for me is when it says on their website....

can be drilled, sawn, milled, ground, filed, tapped, sanded, painted and lacquered once it has cured.
So if you can sand it and grind and drill it, how can it be hard enough to withstand the huge forces that a sprocket puts on it?
Surely it will mash within seconds.

I was thinking the same thing. I would like to see pictures of that shaft before he put the new sprocket on.

Blimey Dave, are you checking up on me!? What I will do, when I get a spare minute, I will try and get time to strip it again and take pictures. Even If it only worked for a couple of months, and you had to repeat the process, its still one HELL of a lot cheaper than a grand for a rebuild!

No, not at all. I'm just a logical person.
It just doesn't make any sense though reading the manufacturers blurb. How can something be filed when cured therefore being soft enough to be filed, but will cope with the stresses of a sprocket and not wear.
You could fill in chips I'm sure but I can't see how it could ever be load bearing in any way shape or form.

Of course I could be proved wrong, and as you say if it makes it last longer then that's great!

The shafts are ok aren't they? They only get fecked when people over-tighten the chain.

My bike hasn't done huge miles (36,000) but the shaft is like new. I keep the chain properly tensioned (dragging on the ground) and all is well.

Surely normal steel (like the steel the countershaft is made of) can be manipulated in the same fashion?

What's 'normal' steel? If the output shafts were made of mild steel so they could be filed, sanded, drilled and tapped etc, they wouldn't last very long. They are hardened steel and all the machining is done before they go through the hardening process.

just out of curiosity - would it be possible to put a bead of weld along the facing surface of the output shaft teeth and than file down to the required shape ??? - bit like the quick steel option but longer lasting ?????

just throwing an idea into the pot.

    Hey,

Can you pm me the name of the guy who did the work?
