XRV stolen, then recovered... ignition switch help.

    Hey guys and gals,

Unbeliveably my AT was nicked from Exmouth Market in Islington on Friday night. Luckily for me I found it parked up 200 meters away with a busted ignition switch. They either got rumbled or just couldn't get it going.

Luckily the only damage is the the ignition switch. I managed to push it home but haven't had a chance to pull it all apart. I'm hoping someone can confirm that the below is the correct pattern part to replace it with.

Ignition Switch with keys (3 Wire). - Motorcycle parts and spares. Paul Smeeton's BitzForBikes

Mine is the very first of the RD07's, a P model. Three wires just doesn't seem to be right, I'm hoping someone can confirm that it is so I can get on and order it.

    Thanks as always,

    Pete

How many wires were you expecting? I believe just about all the models are a 3 wire system. Sez it's for a P model...therefore it should work. Looks like plug n' play to me. Glad you got your bike back.

It is 3 wires definitely as I changed mine this weekend. The barrel is in two parts - the upper part which is where you put your key in, and the lower part which has the wiring to plug into your loom. The two parts can be separated by unscrewing 3 screws. The picture shown on your link is exactly what I got when I ordered mine (though it was listed as 96-03 I think). However, the plug did not fit into the socket on my loom (RD07A) and needed modification to fit.
Is it the wiring that you need or just the key part of the barrel? I ask because I only used the wiring part and so I have a new barrel with 2 keys at home which I don't need. If some scrote just stuck a screw-driver into yours and damaged it, it may be that your wiring is still okay.
I was going to put it in the for sale section but if you want it let me know.

hello' well, my bike is also RD07 model P and mine has more then 3 wires. about 5 or 6 if i remember right. i had a problem when 2 wires came loose from their solder point, and when i checked the haynes manual to see wich goes where it showed only 3 wires for the barrel so i had to figure it out for my self.

Thanks for the offer 1gear1brake, unfortunately, they've managed to break both parts of the assembly. I've ordered the 3pin ignition, hopfully I'll be able to get it to fit.

    Cheers as always,

    Pete

    Crap...

MOD EDIT Sorry mate you're not allowed to post for sale items unless you're a subscribed member, and yes I know you were only tryning to help. Have a look here

Changing them over is a bit of a pain. You will need to remove the top yoke and drill out the security bolts.

Buy yourself a new drill bit. If you havnt got a vice and a decent drill, dont bother !!!!!!!!

As for the wiring, it's very simple... unplug the other one from under the tank and swap them round.. Simples

You will probably have to remove the plug connectors off your old ignition and put them on the new one. Pattern ones come with basic standard fittings and probably wont match your AT ones.

It's VERY easy to do with a small screw driver. Just ease out the tangs !

Re: XRV stolen, then recovered... ignition switch help.

Thanks for that Ted, I may come back to you about your other ignition switch - the one I ordered off eBay hasn't arrived and I've had no comms from the guys selling which seems quite strange.

I managed to get the security bolts out with a centre punch and hammer. Unfortunately whatever device the little scrotes used to break the steering lock has twisted the mounting for the switch so I doubt a new one will bolt back on properly - anyone have a top triple clamp for sale?

I'm wondering if a breaker would have a triple clamp/ignition switch combo for sale, anyone know of a wrecker with an AT in at the mo?

I've been looking for a top yoke for a while, and thought I had one, but the guy hasn't come back to me.

If you find a good one for yours, and wanna sell the old one, please contact me.

I'm sure you could probably straighten it with a bit of gentle heat and some manipulation. I reckon if you got Trent to put it in the oven, then tweaked it with a big bar while it's in a vice you could sort it. Maidstone Motoliner could probably straighten it for you.

What's happened to all the Garagenight Porn, we ain't seen you lot for ages?

Are Mushman at the HUMM this year??

    Cheers

Re: XRV stolen, then recovered... ignition switch help.

    Gudday Bob,

Trent took a look at it on Sat and the consensus was it's stuffed (plus he's off to NZ today for 3 months damnit!) Shame as it doesn't look too bad, it's just one of those nightmare re-allignment deals. If I can't find one I'll just run it with one bolt. If I do find one will be happy to swap a couple of beers for the old 'un.

Further to the eBay purchase, the guy got back to me to say it'll be delivered in 15 days and did I not read his T's & C's indicating such. Obviously I didn't read the delivery info properly. Asked him to cancel the purchase but I get the impression he's not that kind of bloke (like, a decent one).

Yeah, pretty keen on HUMM'ing it again this year. It doesn't really get much better than riding in the Pyrenees for me.

Trent was cutting down an Elefant suspension linkage shaft for Waz on Sat so that'll be in an upcoming Garage Night. Rich has had his Beemer nicked (not the nice one thankfully - still sucks the big one though) and this ****e weather has really slowed us down on the 'ole filming.

    Pete
