choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

hi all!

monuments should be build for my ineptitude but can anybody direct me to a thread where sticky choke cable problem was covered extensively.

dont wanna delve into what has been covered before but my 98 AT is guzzling 7,2 lits for 100 km in traffic where you people state an ave of 5,6 (some 5,2!!!).

havent had the time since last time but still on top of my list is:
1.K&N air filter condition uncertain
2.plugs condition uncertain
3.sticky choke cable PLEASE REFER ME TO A PAST THREAD
4. after market exhaust backfiring after 4000 rpms (the pipe has the looks but everything is wrong with it)

appreciate a link to past threads. relevant keywords on seach engine yields diminishing returns...infact the only hit is mine, which is less than enough.

thanx in advance

Re: choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

Hi there. If you are happy to use a few tools, servicing your choke cables is quite easy.

1. Remove your fuel tank.
2. It will be a bit easier if you remove your airbox aswell but not essential.
3. Trace your choke cables to where it enters each carburetor body.
4. Remove each cable by unscrewing the plastic nut that holds it in. NOTE. The plastic nut is not very strong and is VERY expensive so take your time.
5. Spray some lube into each cable end and work the lever a few times until you are happy that it moves freely.
6. Spray some lube into the hole in the choke body to flush out any dirt or corrosion.
7. Refit the cables. I find it harder to put a cable in rather than taking one out so again, take your time and be careful.

This works for me every time. You might want to clean your spark plugs too (or replace them) as they are probably black and sooty by now.

Hope this helps

Re: choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

are you kidding? it sure as hell was helpfull. Thanx a lot. I am not very much techno savy, I have this unique ear detecting any imminent disturbance in the engine but tend to shy away when it comes to putting my hands on it.

Technicians are clueless....

one last question though, another user in adv riders advised to clean the air filter reminding also to SCOOP. Now perhaps it is my english...scoop what? Mean remove the filter from the box and clean it?

again thanks 4 the hand

Re: choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

The choke cable is well explained as above.

Sticking chokes cause allsorts of bad running, see how it is when chokes are free and new plugs fitted.

Scoop . .

The standard paper air filter is throw away.

Aftermarket airfilters are washable.

I suppose he could mean 'scoop' any dirt etc from airbox before removing airfilter.

I get 10 to 12 miles per litre. (16 to 19 km per litre).

When ckokes were sticking 8 miles per litre

Re: choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

If I was you, I'd disable your choke completely. The bike should start easily without it down to temperatures of about 0 Celcius, and colder than that with care. (When it gets down to about -5 or less, I use an electric fan heater to warm the engine, but that is only needed if it has been standing all night). I am guessing temperatures less than 0 Celcius are not too common where you live, unless your house is on the top of a mountain

If you disconnect the choke cable from the carbs (follow the instructions above), you can remove the plungers from the end of the cable. Clean each plunger, grease them lightly, and push them back into the carbs (don't worry, you can get them out again later if you want to using a small screwdriver, tweezers or a bit of thin wire). Then insert a short bolt into the carb and gently screw it in, so the plungers are pushed right into the carb. If you haven't got a bolt the right size, you can use the little slot-head cap that covers the end of the pin that hold the brake pads in the caliper.

(BTW if you do decide to do this, you can cut the choke cable near the carb end. If you do that you can then remove the cable sleeve and the 90 degree bend at the end, and that lets you get a socket onto the plastic nut. That makes it very easy to remove. That is worth doing if you want to be able to connect the choke up again later, since if you break just one of those plastic nuts trying to remove them with the cable attached, it will cost you as much to replace as a new cable!)

If you clean the cable up, it will probably work, but it will cause problems again. A proper fix requires replacing the cable and the parts at the end of the cable (plunger, spring, the 90 degree bend etc.) That costs about 120 sterling/140 euro, and you might have to do it again in another year or two

Istanbul is on the same latitude as NYC. Last friday it was -7 C and 10 days back we had -17 C. Ofcourse these are the extremes but on average we live on by 3-5 degrees.

THe good thing is I usually keep her 6 stories below ground level 7-8 degrees better than outside.

I am using the bike more for basic transportation than for hobby..so I may yet have problems beefing it up with a hand dryer But point taken.

As for the prescription I will consider thanks mate.

damn, there goes one more place I could emigrate to when I get sick of the climate in Scotland

If 3-5 degrees is typical you'll do fine without a choke. Often need to start it when it is much below zero?

Re: choke relaps!!!!!!!!!! Quick help svp.

If you ride in sub zero conditions, I'd be tempted to try cleaning up the choke cable and getting the bike running OK, and then don't use the choke! You could even use a cable tie to stop the choke lever being pulled by accident, or disconnect the cable from the lever.

If you manage without the choke, then that's great, and you know you won't have this problem ever again.

But if you do get stuck in cold weather, and do have to use the choke, at least it will be connected for you. You will probably end up with a stuck choke again, but you won't be stuck somewhere with a bike that won't start.
