    New AT - Metzeler Tourances?

I've just bought an AT today, it needs new tyres.. I've done a search on here and found a bit of info and seems the Metzeler tourances are a good choice? I will be doing mostly road but hope to do some off road too, I do have plans for a euro on/off road trip at some point but at the moment it'll be mostly uk touring with mostly road and trails... so is the Metzelers the best choice? They don't really look like they'll cope with much off road if I'm honest??

tourance , great for on road and theodd slow "across the field to tent" thingy but no no no to trail riding unless hard dusty road, better off with either TKC ok for both on/off road but 75 trail 25 road .

do a search on the web thingy under xrv tyres -paul-s has good info loads written , in a ideal world 2 sets tyres wheels but we aint that rich yet.

Re: New AT - Metzeler Tourances?

OK so the general feeling is the tourances are a bit too road orientated.... are the anakees better off road? they're more expensive I know that much but they do look like they'd cope with off road better.

I don't intend any full on trail riding at the minute as I have a WR426 and XR440 for that but if I'm out on the AT and see some trails I'd like to be able to ride them without making it tooo hard on myself!

I do intend to do a europe tour with a lot of off road but when it comes to that I'll put a set of TKC's on...

    edited post....

However.. seems TKC80's are £118 a pair off ebay so a fair bit cheaper... how long will they last with road work though?

    edit again..

no wait.. £155 deivered assuming these are correct tyre sizes?

Re: New AT - Metzeler Tourances?

    I bloody hate buying tyres!!

Found a very useful wikipedia from here... seems these are the correct tyre sizes so looking at £140ish delivered

90/90-21 140/80-17 Continental TKC80 Twinduro Tyres NEW on eBay (end time 08-Mar-10 19:03:31 GMT)

I am tempted to go for these..! Just a bit wary as I'll be doing 70% road at least but would like the ability to go off road whenever .... so .. TKC still best choice?

    Thanks!

Although a 150 rear will fit an AT, a 140 is the standard size and the one most people fit.

TKC's for on-road use are pretty acceptable and I had 4000 miles out of my last set, although the rear was a slick by the time I changed it!

I'd say my bike does 85% on-road, but at slow (A road) speeds. Fast cruising on motorways will square off a rear TKC pretty quickly.

Expect to use 2 rears for every one front.

REMEMBER TKC80's are speed rated up to 99mph ONLY.

So by that do you mean I should get 8000 miles to a front and 4000 miles approx to a rear with road work?

To me for the price that sounds perfectly acceptable. a set is £130 and a rear is £61 so thats £190 for 8000 miles if I'm right?

That gives me full road use but the option to go off road whenever I find a random trail

As for speed, I didn't think the AT really went much over 100 comfortably anyway haha

Re: New AT - Metzeler Tourances?

Fronts last longer, but wear funny towards the end of their life. The knobbles tend to look like wedges and they vibrate more at creeping speeds.

Rears just square off and go bald in the middle.

I'd say 4000 miles for a rear, and it really would be at the end of it's useful life (others may get more or less). 8000 for a front is unlikely, but you never know, but my guess is you'd be looking at it thinking "I need to replace that" long before 8000 miles!

As a forum member, you get a 5% discount on prices at Busters, so it may be worth pricing them up too.

TKC's do look right on an AT, that's the only reason I fit them, not because I spend every day in mud!

Well, I could change my mind every two minutes haha but I think the TKC's offer the best all round and as you say they "look right on the AT!" I'll worry about replacing them when they're worn and need replacing

Ebay is still cheapest I think at £140 delivered... can I just confirm these are correct sizes etc

    Thanks for the advice!!
