    Crash Bars

I know there has been several postings in the past regarding crash bars for the AT. Ive read most of them and done my own research but am no closer to deciding on what bars to get. I put a posting in the for sale and wanted asking for crash bars, but no joy in buying a second hand set...so Im going to buy new.

I wanted something that protected as much of the fairing as possible which directed me to the SW Motech ones, engine bars + fairing protectors...cost £169 from wemoto. Only problem with these is the mounting. I wanted to stay away from anything that connected to the bash plate after reading all the previous engine bars postings. I can see that the bash plate is only connected with a couple of small bars. And in an accident I can see these snapping.

So, looked at the other SW Motech ones, just the engine bars. They are mounted onto the central engine column but they dont protect as much of the fairing. Cost £141 from wemoto.

Considered the Touratech ones, (think approx 170 euros, cant remember where from). Again, they mount better but dont protect much of the fairing.

So what should I get??? It concerns me that my only reason for wanting engine bars is to protect as much of the bike as possible when I drop it. This includes fairing as well (I know the panels are not cheap). And if the lower engine bars dont do this then whats the point?

Has anyone got the full fairing ones who has had an accident - does the mounting brackets snap? And anyone got the lower engine bars who has had an accident. Any damage to the top fairing panels?

Any alternaives that satisfy my requirements? And for under £200.

SW Motech from Wemoto. An off at 50mph that FrancisGeoff measured afterwards had the bike scraping along its side for something like 35m left the bars worn half-way through but the fairing undamaged.

    Can't fault them.

Which ones, the engine bars, or engine bars with fairing protectors? On another note - replaced my battery, replaced blown fuse for headlights. Tested reg rec (haynes manual instructions - finally got to understand it) and correct voltage flowing through. Checked voltage of battery when engine running and all are within normal tolerances. Thanks for the advice from previous posts Whealie.

    Re: Crash Bars

Did more research on this site (and the web) on crash bars....decided to go with the SW Motech ones, but then found that www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk are flogging Givi bars for £71.16 including postage. So went for the cheaper Givi bars.......Time will tell if I have made the right decision, but they are half the price of the sw-motech bars and I have other things I want to buy for the bike, so cheap wins for now.

    Re: Crash Bars

I'v just ordered some givi bars for my strom from
    www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk
I found them after a google search and they certainly seem very cheap compared to everywhere else.
Found some reviews about them on the vsrom owners club site.
apparently delivery can be very slow, so if you aren't in a rush!!

V-strom.co.uk members also get a 10% discount (but you can't use it at the same time as the free postage)

I'm considering the Alpos Aluminium cases, 2x41Ltr ally boxes for less than £200. Bargain!

(Imagine all the hair straighteners I could get in them!!)

    Re: Crash Bars

If you can afford it, get the Touratech set. Mounting of SWM bars is a bit of a bitch and many of us in Germany (me too) using them have modified the holders around the frame to avoid contact with brake lines or to avoid using the upper mountings of the cooling units, which are stupid to use to begin with. Check out www.africatwin.de : Beitrag anzeigen - SW-Motech Sturzbügel & Kühlerbefestigung bei 07/07a at the German AT forum, you´ll see some pic of modified upper mountings, including some from me (Keks).

Whilst the SWM have a good crash record, the TT´s have as well.

I´ll strip the bike and repaint the frame next winter and at that occasion will buy myself some TT bars for Christmas.

    Cheers
    Chris

Does anyone know if these carsh bars, for the RD07, will fit the RD04? If not, could they be modified simply to fit?

    Re: Crash Bars

I just got some SW Motec bars from www.wemoto.com for my RD07. For the white ones its like £130 something and for the black ones its £140. Took 3 days before it was deliverd to me and took me about 20min to fit them. have a look on wemoto`s website you will find loads more goodies for your bike. Only problem is the instructions are mostly in german but there are pics to so its easy even for blokes like me

Knobbly , just go to wemoto`s website and specify what your bike is , RD07 or 04 and it will come up with the bars you will need
