XRV 650 Brake slide pin caps

    Hi everybody!

Has anyona got any tips on removing the slide pin caps that seal of the brake pins in the front caliper of the RD03?

I've got to rebuild the caliper and got is of the bike but can't for the life of me get the two screws out to get to the actual pins. I'm letting it soak in deblock oil for the night now, but any tips are more than welcome.

    Cheers,

    DbVdb

I always remove them (on my RD04) whilst on the fork leg. It makes it easier as you can get better purchase on the screwdriver. You can also (as a last resort) use an impact driver, but make sure the fork bolts are tight. After that you need to hammer/drift them out!
When I grow up ..... yeah right!

Y'see, I could say "You can go fast, I can go anywhere, Africa Twin" But you buggers have 'em as well so it would sound pretty lame .... oops!

You´re talking about a screw similar to #18 on that picture? Motorrad Teile fr Honda XRV-750-T (G) / F-9 VORDERRAD-BREMSSATTEL

These are a bitch. I recently ended up drilling one out, which can only be done once the brake is on your workbench. I´ve been able to drill through and leave only a thing ring of the screw, then stick an allen key through the hole and screw out the main bolt underneath, which then, once meeting the drilled-through screw, turned the screw out as well. The better way is probably to drill a smaller hole and use a screw extractor (a conical screw, cutting it´s own thread by turning left instead of right). Impact wrenches are said to work as well, but I would be hesitant to use those on the break.

    Regards
    Chris

An impact driver or a big screwdriver with a square or hex shaft that you can put a spanner or grips on.

Remount the caliper on the fork leg to give you improved leverage.

Use plenty of Copaslip (copper grease) on reassembly and you shouldn't have the problem next time.

    Good Luck

Re: XRV 650 Brake slide pin caps

Thanks for the info guys, I got them off (eventually) with an impact wrench.

But I can't seem to get a break with this brake.

Underneath the caps the previous owner left me a nice little surprise in the form of completely stripped heads

The only way I see getting them out is to use a screw extracter with a reverse thread. I haven't got the tools or experience to do this (don't want to mess up the caliper learning how to do it properly), so I'm now making this my mechanics problem

As always thanks for the help!

Had the same problem myself and the mechanic just gently hammered in tightly fitting a torx bit, into the mashed allen hole, and then undid the pin. You'll need a new pin if it works but it was remarkably easy. I'd spent ages filing down an oversize allen key which didn't work at all, a torx bit should grip a lot better.

    Cheers

Actually, this is usually the easier-to-solve problem. Cut the pin, remove the brake pads and turn the remaining pin with a good grip.

That would be my solution as well.
I am sure David Silvers could supply the replacements.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
