123 miles on a tank!! and awfull run on reserve

    Hi All,

So ive finally got down to reserve ( i think ) and a managed to get 120 miles out of it!! mmmm not that impressed but its still new to me and have been doing alot of town blatting so prob not the best to go by.

What would cause excess fuel use other than:
    riding like a knob
    leaks
    facet pump ( i hope not )
air filter and plugs are new.

The thing is that when i went to reserve it was still running like a guttless wonder and if i pinned it, it would stall....
I would assume that with a fuel ( changed for the facet job already) pump it would take up the slack in the fuel feed pretty quick.....my old tenere would fart and bang id switch it to reserve and that would be that but the AT seems to be reluctant to run on it smoothly.

    So is it worth:

A: running it longer in reserve to see if it smoothes out?
    B: New Fuel filter?
C: service fuel tap (if poss)
D: take the advice of you lot who know best!

    cheers in advance.

do a plug chop and check the colour sounds like the usual stuck choke plungers.

loads info in the africatwin section.

No not the peskey plungers!! they seem to do everything!

They are on the list to check and i understand that they will make me use more fuel but would that affect the running on reserve??

How clean is the air filter?
Replace the fuel filter as it may also be blocked and not allowing enough fuel through.

I'd guess that if it can empty a tank in just over 100 miles, its getting enough fuel through!

The only way it would run differently on reserve is if the reserve was partially blocked (crap in tank). Its an easy job to remove the taps and clean them out.

I would also check the choke first. Its almost guaranteed to be the problem, you should get around 200miles before switching to reserve once fixed.

If the filter on the taps was full of debris ( blocked) the fuel would not be getting through properly.
Remove the taps and clean, also flush the tank to remove any debris that may be in there.

I've had excessive fuel use twice
First time was choke - loads of banging popping and soot out of the exhaust
Second time was crap in carbs causing overflow through the vent pipe which I noticed cos of a petrol smell coming from the puddle under the bike!!.

I'm in Bournemouth too and willing to give a hand with diagnosis if ur having probs - just PM me for my mobile
