    stainless steel brake dics bolts..DON'T!!

I bought original bolts when i replaced rear disc afew months ago, then saw some S/S on ebay @ £10 for 8.. great price, last week put my spare wheel on minus disc, so thought use the new bolts... I think they're made from a new material.............stainless putty!!!!!!!!!!. They maybe cheap but are not worth it. Can't comment on the bolts from Wemoto @ £4 each. Just a word of caution.

There are certain items I would not use on the bikes running gear.
Stainless steel bolts is one, they may be good for engine casings but for mounting discs or sprockets, I do not think so.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

As above. Most stainless bolts don't have the correct strength characteristics for applications like brake bolts. Fine for fairing fixings etc but not where safety is concerned. Some trusted companies like Pro-bolt can supply the right ones for you, otherwise OE is best I think. Pricey, but peace of mind is hard to value.

Fair comment, but why bother to replace bolts with new ones for the sake of it just because the others have been used. Can understand it if the ones being removed are damaged though.

the originals left me treating a mate to afew drinks... snap-on hex drive, hq star torque drive, left in penetration fluid, fine point heated, finally worked with a big bar being seam welded to all 4 bolts. Unusable afterwards i thought. wemoto/silvers originals from now on.

I tend to agree Sean, I didn't post a reply earlier because I never know how some members might react. I've used lots of stainless in the past wit no probs at all. In the stores where I used to work there were lots of button head type M8 screws that passed off very well as disc rotor fasteners. Used them on the XJR1300 no bother. Personally I prefer stainless bolts but no doubt there are plenty who chose to use crap BZP ones with 4.2 stamped on the top!

Pro-bolt are nothing special 90% of pro-bolt is the name the bolts are nothing special either they only got a name because they did anodised bike specific kits.

My works is food industry so everything has to be high grade stainless all our nuts bolts and fasteners all come from:-

FWB Products Limited - specialising in tools, fasteners, pipeline, electrical, workwear, safety & janitorial goods.

They are a local shop to us you can have any tensile grade any length any finish and they cost pence, the name PRO-BOLT aint worth a w**k because your paying over inflated prices for a name and personally i don't want blue, pink or gold tacky bolts plastered over my bikes.

    BUt thats my 2penneth

Re: stainless steel brake dics bolts..DON'T!!

I just use any old bolt I can find in the skip at the recycling centre. If you get enough leverage on them, one bolt will eventually fit anything.

Just kidding, please don't try this at home kids!

I was always told that stainless steel in ANY high shear, high load environment is a no-no, and that was from mechanics who knew what they were talking about (but worked on 200mph MotoGP bikes!!)

I guess you can probably get the right tensile strength stainless steel for brakes, but is that nuts only, or bolts as well??? Bolts would have to deal with more sheer than a retaining nut.

Plain old high tensile steel does for me, or titanium when I win the lottery!!
